Varför slutar tjejer med fotboll?: En intervjustudie utifrån tränares perspektiv på avhopp bland fotbollstjejer i de övre tonåren2022Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Syfte

    Abstract [en]

    Aim

The purpose of the study is to investigate how people who are active within NIU, position themselves to the organization´s selection and admission process in relation to the influence of elite associations. Furthermore, this study will create a better understanding of this through three research questions. In the research questions we use the word ’legitimze’, which in this case is synonymous with ’the stories of the respondents’.

    Research questions

    1. How do people working within NIU legitimize their activites?

    2. How do people working within NIU legitimize the selection and admission process to NIU?

    3. How do people active within NIU legitimize the elite club´s involvements?

    Method

The study is based on the qualitative research approach where semi – structured interviews were the approach for data collection. We chose to proceed from a target – oriented and strategic selection when we selected respondents for our survey. Analysis of empirical data was carried out in two different ways, partly via an inductive perspective but also via narrative analysis. As a theoretical framework, we have chosen to start from the positioning theory.

    Results

The results show that all the respondents position themselves in the fact that their activities are elite preparation. Elite preparatory selection and admission process was another theme that also stood out where the selection was largely about the soccer knowledge of the applicants. The third theme that we saw in the results was that the elite associations influence the businesses or try to influence them, with the motive of benefiting their own business.

    Conclusion

In order for the activities, admission and selection to be considered elite, the students' football skills are the single most important aspect. What we also saw was that the club activities' interests in influencing were financial, commercial, and sporting.

Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Most sport injuries including anterior cruciate ligament-injury (ACL) occur at the end of sport events when the person tends to be fatigued. Despite this, the tests commonly used today to assess whether the individual should return to sports are performed in a non-fatigued state.

Aim: The aim of this study was to compare effects of 25 minutes treadmill running, including 15 minutes at a level of high-intenisty on the performance of two different single-leg hop tests between un-injured women and women who underwent an ACL-reconstruction.

Method: Eight un-injured women without any ongoing symptoms from either leg, and 6 women who had undergone an ACL-reconstruction, finished the rehabilitation program and returned to their pre-injury level of activity performed tests at two different occasions. The first occasion included technique training for each single-leg hop and a maximal heart rate test (HRmax) on a treadmill. On the second occasion subjects performed the single-leg hop for distance and the cross-over hop before and directly after 25 minutes running, including 15 minutes on a high-intensity level (>RPE 15 and/or >85 % HRmax). Total jump-distance was measured, registered and analysed for 2 approved trials per leg, condition and hop. A leg symmetry index (LSI) was calculated to assess side-to-side-differences.

Results: The cross-over hop was significantly shorter after running in both groups, whereas no such effect was seen for the single-leg hop for distance. No difference was shown between groups in performed distance, side-to-side difference or LSI-values, before or after running any of the single-leg hops. Subjects in the ACL-group needed significantly more hop-trials on the operated leg compared to the non-operated leg and compared to un-injured subjects to achieve two qualified hops.

Conclusions: Subjects jumped shorter in the cross-over hop after running. This hop can therefore be regarded as sensitive enough to tell fatigued state from a non-fatigued state in both groups. The fatigue protocol did not induce any side-to-side differences in subjects who had undergone ACL-reconstruction, finished their rehabilitation and returned to their pre-injury activity level. Some insecurity may still have been present in the previously injured leg since ACL-operated subjects needed more hop-trials for the operated leg compared to the non-operated leg or compared to un-injured subjects when fatigue.

Fysträning för konståkare i Sverige: Hur bedrivs den idag?2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Six-month Stability of Individual Differences in Sports Coaches’ Burnout, Self-compassion and Social Support.2022In: Proceedings from the 16th European Congress of Sport & Exercise Psychology (FEPSAC), FEPSAC , 2022, p. 237-Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Using a three-wave prospective cross-lagged panel design, the study examined six-month stability of burnout, self-compassion and social support among sports coaches in terms of measurement invariance, mean-level change, rank-order stability, and structural stability. The participating coaches (N = 422; Mage = 44.48, SD = 11.03) completed an online questionnaire measuring self-compassion, social support, coach burnout and demographics at baseline and two follow-ups at three months and six months. The various forms of stability were assessed using structural equation modeling. There was no significant mean-level change in burnout, self-compassion, or social support, and all three constructs exhibited measurement invariance. Rank-order stability remained relatively high, ranging from .78 to .94 across the three time points. For all three constructs, covariances between latent factors were invariant over time, indicating high structural stability. While self-compassion and social support were positively related, both were negatively related to coach burnout. These results confirm the importance of preventing and addressing symptoms of burnout, low self-compassion and poor social support in sports settings.

Tillsammans får idrotten ett lyft: idrottslärarens och idrottsledarens inställning till samverkan inom Idrottslyftet2011Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Peer support for the maintenance of physical activity and health in cancer survivors: the PEER trial - a study protocol of a randomised controlled trial.2019In: BMC Cancer, ISSN 1471-2407, E-ISSN 1471-2407, Vol. 19, no 1, p. 656-, article id 656Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Despite an overwhelming body of evidence showing the benefits of physical activity (PA) and exercise for cancer survivors, few survivors meet the exercise oncology guidelines. Moreover, initiating, let alone maintaining exercise programs with cancer survivors continues to have limited success. The aim of this trial is to evaluate the influence of peer support on moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) and various markers of health 12 months following a brief supervised exercise intervention in cancer survivors.

METHODS: Men and women previously diagnosed with histologically-confirmed breast, colorectal or prostate cancer (n = 226), who are >1-month post-treatment, will be invited to participate in this trial. Once enrolled, participants will complete 4 weeks (12 sessions) of supervised high intensity interval training (HIIT). On completion of the supervised phase, both groups will be provided with written recommendations and verbally encouraged to achieve three HIIT sessions per week, or equivalent exercise that meets the exercise oncology guidelines. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive 12 months of peer support, or no peer support (control). Primary and secondary outcomes will be assessed at baseline, after the 4-week supervised HIIT phase and at 3-, 6- and 12-months. Primary outcomes will include accelerometry-derived MVPA and prescribed HIIT session adherence; whilst secondary outcomes will include cardiorespiratory fitness ([Formula: see text]), body composition, quality of life and select cytokines, myokines and inflammatory markers. Random effects mixed modelling will be used to compare mean changes in outcomes between groups at each time point. A group x time interaction will be used to formally test for differences between groups (alpha =0.05); utilising intention-to-treat analyses.

DISCUSSION: If successful, peer support may be proposed, adopted and implemented as a strategy to encourage cancer survivors to maintain exercise beyond the duration of a short-term, supervised intervention. A peer support-exercise model has the long-term potential to reduce comorbidities, improve physical and mental wellbeing, and significantly reduce the burden of disease in cancer survivors.

Weak Electromagnetic Fields Accelerate Fusion of Myoblasts.2021In: International Journal of Molecular Sciences, ISSN 1661-6596, E-ISSN 1422-0067, Vol. 22, no 9, article id 4407Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Weak electromagnetic fields (WEF) alter Ca2+ handling in skeletal muscle myotubes. Owing to the involvement of Ca2+ in muscle development, we investigated whether WEF affects fusion of myoblasts in culture. Rat primary myoblast cultures were exposed to WEF (1.75 µT, 16 Hz) for up to six days. Under control conditions, cell fusion and creatine kinase (CK) activity increased in parallel and peaked at 4-6 days. WEF enhanced the extent of fusion after one and two days (by ~40%) vs. control, but not thereafter. Exposure to WEF also enhanced CK activity after two days (almost four-fold), but not afterwards. Incorporation of 3H-thymidine into DNA was enhanced by one-day exposure to WEF (~40%), indicating increased cell replication. Using the potentiometric fluorescent dye di-8-ANEPPS, we found that exposure of cells to 150 mM KCl resulted in depolarization of the cell membrane. However, prior exposure of cells to WEF for one day followed by addition of KCl resulted in hyperpolarization of the cell membrane. Acute exposure of cells to WEF also resulted in hyperpolarization of the cell membrane. Twenty-four hour incubation of myoblasts with gambogic acid, an inhibitor of the inward rectifying K+ channel 2.1 (Kir2.1), did not affect cell fusion, WEF-mediated acceleration of fusion or hyperpolarization. These data demonstrate that WEF accelerates fusion of myoblasts, resulting in myotube formation. The WEF effect is associated with hyperpolarization but WEF does not appear to mediate its effects on fusion by activating Kir2.1 channels.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Metod

    Abstract [sv]

Alcohol Consumption Over the Retirement Transition in Sweden: Different Trajectories Based on Education2022In: Work, Aging and Retirement, ISSN 2054-4642, E-ISSN 2054-4650, Vol. 8, no 1, p. 74-81Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Retirement is a major life transition that involves changes to everyday routines, roles, and habits. Previous studies suggest that retirement may influence drinking habits. Many natural inhibitors of alcohol consumption disappear with the removal of work constraints. The potential impact depends on both individual and contextual factors. Women in the cohorts undergoing retirement now have been more active on the labor market, including the occupation of higher status jobs, which indicates more financial resources as well as a larger role loss after retirement. Also, the current cohorts who retire have had more liberal drinking habits throughout their lives compared to previous cohorts. We therefore examined changes in alcohol consumption surrounding retirement in different education groups among women and men undergoing retirement using annual data from the Health, Aging and Retirement Transitions in Sweden (HEARTS) study, a longitudinal national study of 60- to 66-year-olds (n = 5,913), from 2015 to 2018. Latent growth curve models were used to estimate trajectories of alcohol consumption. Results showed that those who retired during the follow-up increased their usual weekly alcohol consumption while those who worked or were retired throughout the period had stable drinking habits. Those who were retired reported the highest alcohol consumption. The increase surrounding retirement was driven by people with higher education. Women with tertiary education and men with intermediate or tertiary education increased their weekly alcohol intake after retirement, while those with low education had unchanged drinking habits. Mechanisms and motivations that may fuel increased alcohol intake among people with higher education should be further investigated.

Cocreating injury prevention training for youth team handball: bridging theory and practice2022In: BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine, E-ISSN 2055-7647, Vol. 8, no 2, article id e001263Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Although it is advocated that end-users are engaged in developing evidence-based injury prevention training to enhance the implementation, this rarely happens. The ‘Implementing injury Prevention training ROutines in TEams and Clubs in youth Team handball (I-PROTECT)’ uses an ecological participatory design incorporating the perspectives of multiple stakeholders throughout the project. Within the I-PROTECT project, the current study aimed to describe the development of holistic injury prevention training specifically for youth handball players through using knowledge from both end-users (coaches and players) and researchers/handball experts. Employing action evaluation within participatory action research, the cyclical development process included three phases: research team preparation, handball expert-based preparation and end-user evaluation to develop injury prevention training incorporating both physical and psychological perspectives. To grow the knowledge of the interdisciplinary research team, rethinking was conducted within and between phases based on participants’ contributions. Researchers and end-users cocreated examples of handball-specific exercises, including injury prevention physical principles (movement technique for upper and lower extremities, respectively, and muscle strength) combined with psychological aspects (increase end-user motivation, task focus and body awareness) to integrate into warm-up and skills training within handball practice. A cyclical development process that engaged researchers/handball experts and end-users to cocreate evidence-based, theory-informed and context-specific injury prevention training specifically for youth handball players generated a first pilot version of exercises including physical principles combined with psychological aspects to be integrated within handball practice.

On practising in physical education: outline for a pedagogical model.2018In: Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy, ISSN 1740-8989, E-ISSN 1742-5786, Vol. 23, no 2, p. 197-208Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Models-based approaches to physical education have in recent years developed as a way for teachers and students to concentrate on a manageable number of learning objectives, and align pedagogical approaches with learning subject matter and context. This paper draws on Hannah Arendt’s account ofvita activato map existing approaches to physical education as oriented towards: (a) health and exercise, (b) sport and games, and (c) experience and exploration.

Purpose: The aim of the paper is to outline a new pedagogical model for physical education:a practising model. We argue that the form of human activity related to practising is not well represented in existing orientations and models. To sustain this argument, we highlight the most central aspects of practising, and at the same time describe central features of the model.

Relevance and implications: The paper addresses pedagogical implications the practising model has for physical education teachers. Central learning outcomes and teaching strategies related to four essential and ‘non-negotiable’ features of the practising model are discussed. These strategies are: (1) acknowledging subjectivity and providing meaningful challenges, (2) focusing on content and the aims of practising, (3) specifying and negotiating standards of excellence and (4) providing adequate time to practising.

Conclusion: The practising model has the potential to inform new perspectives on pedagogical approaches, and renew and improve working methods and learning practices, in physical education.

    Abstract [sv]

Manliga tränares arbete kring menstruationens påverkan på träning: En kvalitativ studie2023Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose and research question: The purpose with the study was to investigate male coaches’ knowledge about menstruations impact on training. Also, to investigate the communication between coach and athlete about menstruation. The authors used three main questions

What kind of knowledge about menstruations impact on training has male coaches? How are their experience about the communication about menstruation with their

athletes? What kind of knowledge do they need about menstruation and the impact on training.

Method: The authors used a qualitative method where they interviewed six different male coaches. Three coaches from TeamGym and three from cross-country skiing. All material has then been processed through a thematic content analysis. Results: The purpose and questions were answered, and the results was divided into three main questions which were then took down into subcategories. Under the first question, what kind of knowledge the trainers have, it is summarized that the trainers themselves felt that they had a certain knowledge but also that they need continued education about menstruation. Many of the trainers described their knowledge of menstruation linked to energy balance and training load. The coaches also described how they used their knowledge in different situations. To summarize the question about communication with athletes, was that there seems to be a certain taboo. The coaches reflect that the most important factor for breaking taboos seems to lie in the trust between coaches and athletes, coach-athlete relationship. The coaches also want to respect the athlete's integrity. The summary for the last main question, which was, what knowledge do the trainers need more of in further work with menstruations impact on training, they themselves described that they need more practically applicable research, a more open discussion climate and time for continuing education.

Conclusion: The conclusion was that more knowledge is needed about menstruations impact on training and more of the general knowledge about menstruation. More education is required and that the trainers must actively work with the subject. Around the communication with athletes, the coaches need time to get to know their athletes and build a trust that must then be maintained and nurtured from both the athlete's and the coach's side. A strong coach- athlete relationship. The coaches also need further education to increase their knowledge in order to feel comfortable and to be able to answer the questions that may arise about menstruations impact on training.

Sambandet mellan fysisk aktivitet och kognitiv förmåga: En enkätstudie2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

    Aim

The purpose of this study is trying to understand and problemize how a homosexual top-level sports women experiences her situation in Swedish sports movement. Consequently I want to acquire a greater insight in another person’s world.

    Method

The empirical material consists of one qualitative research interview. A female coach in top-level sports got to know my need for a person with appropriate knowledge, experiences and with a great extent of awareness and with the will to open up and talk. She let colleagues of her know of my wish and with a so-called “snowball-selection” I got hold of a suitable interviewee. The interview was characterized, as far as possible, with a great deal of freedom for the interviewee to conduct the conversation. This was made through a low grade of standardized questions and with a deliberate attempt from my side to guide her towards the areas of which I had the ambition to gain knowledge. A recorder was used during the interview. The interview was printed out, the text was interpreted and analysed, taking three different interpretation-perspectives as a starting point: the realistic, the deconstructive and the critical.

    Result / Conclusion

Sports are, and have been, of great importance for my interviewee. Sports have been her way of surviving. The high spirit within her sport, besides the secure environment it represents, my interviewee has been given a great deal of joy and unforgettable memories. She finds her situation in her team: “very special”. Nevertheless she questions the unfair conditions between the female- and the male teammates, concerning economics, commitment and acceptance. My interviewee sees this situation, significantly, due to the male dominance in the committee and sponsor group and their lack of interest in the female team. The sports context, in which we find her at present, has given her the strength to withstand the heterosexual norm. This norm has with its demand for heterosexuality as the natural and normal sexuality affected her negatively, exposed her to low acceptance, negative attitudes and silence from the environment. Today we find my interviewee in a “bubble”. This “bubble” is full of high spirit, acceptance and joy and has given her the power to be open with her sexuality. Outside of the “bubble” she is constantly surrounded by demands for heterosexuality and homophobic attitudes that clearly marks the sports ground. Her contradictions in her statements certainly show how affected she is by the homophobia. Affected in that way that she in many cases adapts a negative and homophobic attitude to herself and homosexuality.

Breathing resistance in automated metabolic systems is high in comparison with the Douglas Bag method and previous recommendations2018In: Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part P: Journal of Sports Engineering and Technology, ISSN 1754-3371, Vol. 232, no 2, p. 122-130Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate the resistance to breathing in metabolic systems used for the distribution and measurement of pulmonary gas exchange. A mechanical lung simulator was used to standardize selected air flow rates (V·, L/s). The delta pressure (?p, Pa) between the ambient air and the air inside the equipment was measured in the breathing valve?s mouthpiece adapter for four metabolic systems and four types of breathing valves. Resistance for the inspiratory and expiratory sides was calculated as RES?=?(?p/V·)?Pa/L/s. The results for resistance showed significant (p?<?0.05) between-group variance among the tested metabolic systems, breathing valves, and between most of the completed V·. The lowest resistance among the metabolic systems was found for a Douglas Bag system which had approximately half of the resistance compared to the automated metabolic systems. The automated systems were found to have higher resistance even at low V· in comparison with previous findings and recommendations. For the hardware components, the highest resistance was found for the breathing valves, while the lowest resistance was found for the hoses. The results showed that resistance in metabolic systems can be minimized through conscious choices of system design and hardware components.

Breathing resistance in metabolic systems: Its effects on pulmonary ventilation and oxygen uptake in elite athletes with high aerobic power2020In: Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part P: Journal of Sports Engineering and Technology, ISSN 1754-3371, Vol. 234, no 3, p. 217-226Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects on pulmonary ventilation and oxygen uptake ( (V) over dot athletes with a very high maximal oxygen uptake (V) over dotO(2)max) and corresponding high ventilation capacity when using a modern metabolic system with relatively high resistance to breathing (HIGH(RES)), compared to a traditional system with low resistance to breathing (LOWRES). Four rowers and three cross-country skiers (without asthma), competing at a high international level, performed in experimental conditions with LOWRE (S)and HIGH(RES) using a rowing ergometer and roller skis on a treadmill. The results showed that (V) over dotO(2), blood lactate, heart rate and respiratory exchange ratio were not different between the LOWRES and HIGH(RES) test conditions during both submaximal and maximal exercise. Also, the athlete's time to exhaustion (treadmill) and mean power (rowing ergometer) from maximal tests were no different between the two conditions. However, ventilation and expiratory O-2 and CO2 concentrations were different for both submaximal and maximal exercise. Thus, the authors have concluded that the differences in resistance to breathing of metabolic systems influence elite endurance athletes (V) over dot(E)at low to very high workloads, thus affecting the expired gas fractions, but not the submaximal (V) over dotO(2), (V) over dotO(2)maxand performance in a laboratory setting at sea level.

”Vad vet jag egentligen om hälsa?”: En intervjuundersökning om hälsokunskaper hos elever i årskurs 92019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Publikens inverkan på fotbollsspelare: "Den tolfte spelaren"2019Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Spotlighted or Hidden in Plain Sight: Consequences of the Post-War Ban on Ethnic Registration in Sweden2023In: Historical Explorations of Modern Epidemiology: Patterns, Populations and Pathologies / [ed] Heini Hakosalo, Katariina Parhi, Annukka Sailo, Cham, Switzerland: Palgrave Macmillan, 2023, 1, p. 113-133Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The 1945 census was the last to record ethnicity in Sweden, and in 1973, registering ethnicity became virtually illegal. Swedish population statistics and official health and social registers therefore do not contain information on the ethnic background of the people registered. Exploring socio-medical and epidemiological research in Sweden from the 1940s to the 1980s, the chapter discusses the tension between ethical and legal constraints on the one hand, and the scientific, administrative, and political need for accurate information on minority and ethnic groups on the other. Three alternative research strategies to substitute for the lack of data on ethnicity are identified: using alternative but related categories such as nationality, country of birth, or immigrant status; “reading ethnicity” from pre-existing data collections; and conducting time-consuming and costly special studies designed to enable researchers to bypass the proscription of ethnic registration. These strategies have produced new epidemiological and socio-medical understandings concerning ethnicity and health/disease. However, as certain groups and categories have been statistically more available or visible in society than others, an uneven body of knowledge has evolved. In effect, some minorities have been spotlighted while others have remained hidden in plain sight.

Simning, kultur och religion: En studie om tjejer som inte kan/vill delta på simlektioner p.g.a. kulturella/religiösa skäl2013Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Syfte

Lärarna intervjuades enskilt, medan eleverna intervjuades i grupper.

    Resultat

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Aim: The purpose of the study was to investigate the wives of elite team gymnasts on sustainable elite sport and how to enable longer elite careers in teamgym. This is based on the following research question:

    • What factors do elite team gymnasts believe contribute to a sustainable elite career in teamgym?

Method: In order to answer the study's purpose and research question, a qualitative interview method was chosen. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the help of six elite active team gymnasts, both men and women, born in 1996 or earlier. The interviews were recorded, listened to, transcribed and analyzed. Quotes and main themes were developed using inductive and deductive thematic analysis.

Results: The result showed that the theme that pervades throughout the interviews is the passion for the sport, that the participants simply love teamgym, and that this is a strong internal motivation for them. Furthermore, the themes “sports context” and “everyday context” are presented with several sub-themes. Above all, three categories are highlighted as the most essential in why the participants choose to continue their elite practice, these are: relatedness, support and drive. Findings also show that the attitude towards the concepts of sustainability and elite sport varies greatly between the participants.

Conclusion: With previous research results as a starting point, both connections and differences in the results in this study are established. During the interviews, various themes and their consequences emerge, which together in the study are referred to as “a healthy elite sport environment”. The healthy elite sport environment is a strong prerequisite for enabling longer elite careers in team gymnastics and should be taken into account and reviewed by all involved actors.

Vilka arbetsmiljöfaktorer har salutogen inverkan hos sjuksköterskor?: En intervjustudie om välbefinnande på arbetsplatsen.2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Metod

    Abstract [en]

    Aim

The aim of this study is to examine how school principals describe the concept of health and the schools’ work with health promotion. Furthermore, the aim is to analyze and discuss what perspectives that are prominent in the schools’ regarding health. The question formulation of the study complies:

    1. How do the schools’ principals describe the concept of health? 2. In what way do the schools’ principals work with health promoting activities? 3. What aspects of health are prominent in the upper secondary school activities?

    Method

The study has a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews as data collection method. The sample consists of six principals and assistant principals operating in five different upper secondary schools. The collected results have been interpreted and analyzed using the WHO health definition, the concept of health literacy and the perception of health as positive or negative along a continuum.

    Results

The principals’ definitions of health started with the physical aspect, and thereafter included the psychological and the social aspect of health. The practical working methods that were undertaken to prevent psychological disorders were physical activities and conversations about the pupils’ wellbeing. The conversations were reactive measures when it became visible that the pupil in question took harm or felt bad. The six principals had in common that they worked with an equal treatment plan. Generally, in all of the upper secondary schools, norm critical discussions as well as discussions about value grounds were held. Two ways to work were observed: one school had a supervisor per class who was responsible for health promotion, another school had a senior lecturer in environmental science that ran the school forward in these questions.

    Conclusions

The conclusions presented in this study were that all principals were aware of that health according to the WHO definition, consists of a whole; the physical, mental and social aspect. All of the schools used physical activity as treatment for coping with physiological disorders usually caused by stress. This work aligns with Brülde & Tenglands (2003) thoughts about preventing ill health and promoting health by using physical activity. From this point of view there is a demand from the school management to be able to contribute more with physical activity in school and to educate the pupils according to health literacy and give them the tools to manage stress throughout their lives. This aligns with the theory of health literacy, where the ability to make healthy choices is central.

Aerob träning versus dataspel: en minnesvärd jämförelse2015Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Aerob träning gör hippocampus i hjärnan mer hållbart.

Exploring the experiences and perceptions of coaches, athletes, and integrated support teams towards the management of three national Paralympic teams.2024In: Psychology of Sport And Exercise, ISSN 1469-0292, E-ISSN 1878-5476, Vol. 71, article id 102588Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study explored the experiences and perceptions of coaches, athletes, and integrated support teams towards the management of three Paralympic teams across North America and Europe. Six focus groups with athletes, three interviews with head coaches, and 10 interviews with support team members were conducted and analyzed using a reflexive thematic analysis. Our analysis resulted in three overarching themes to portray the coaches' role and behaviours in managing their (1) athletes, (2) integrated support teams, and (3) team as a collective unit. All teams were made up of a diverse group of athletes that required individualized considerations regarding age, finances, and disability. Coaches were successful when they fostered autonomy and managed interpersonal conflict by utilizing their integrated support teams to foster cohesiveness. This study provides an in-depth view of the role of the coach in managing national parasport teams by incorporating multiple perspectives from three teams around the world.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

    Aim

The purpose of this study is to examine the correlation between commonly used jump tests and sprint performance over 10 m skate on-ice.

    The questions we will answer are;

    -       What correlations exist between a set of jumping tests and the sprint ability over 10 m skate on-ice?

    -       Which jumping test has the strongest correlation with the sprint ability over 10 m skate on-ice?

    -       Are there any differences between junior- and senior players, and in that case wich?

    Method

In this study 34 subjects participated and they were between 16-25 years of age and had 9-20 years of icehockey playing experience. They performed five jumping tests; countermovement jump with arms (CMJa), one-legged vertical jump on the right leg, one-legged vertical jump on the left leg, squat jump (SJ) and a horizontal broad jump. On-ice skate test was performed to measure the acceleration ability over 10 m skate sprint in order to try to find correlations between vertical jumping height and the sprint ability, as well as horizontal jumping length and the sprint ability. The tests were performed 48 hours apart. At the first test occasion the jumping tests were performed and at the second the on-ice test was performed.

    Results

The results of this study shows a significant correlation between SJ and the on-ice test result, as well as between CMJa and the on-ice test result. The correlation between SJ and the On-Ice test was r = -0.422 (p < 0.05), and the correlation between CMJa and the on-ice test was r = -0.403 (p < 0.05). When comparing the jump tests to the on-ice test for only juniors no significant correlations were found. However, the seniors (n=7) showed a stronger correlation between the SJ and the on-ice test (r = -0.761, p < 0.05).

    Conclusions

The study  confirmed that SJ is the jumping test that best correlates with  the acceleration/sprint ability skating on-ice. It was also shown that SJ is a more useful predictor for the acceleration/sprint ability for seniors than for juniors. More research will be needed for a deeper understanding of this area.

Off-ice tester för att utvärdera snabbhet on-ice: En korrelationsstudie av olika upprepade sprinttester2017Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Syfte

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine male teacher students in PE and their taste for dance and movement to music and dance education and what might affect this taste. The aim is concretized into four questions:

    • What earlier experience does the male teacher students in PE have from dance and movement to music?
    • What's their view on GIH's education in dance and movement to music?
    • How do they experience their own competence in dance and movement to music?
    • Which other factors might influence the informants' habitus and taste for dance?

    Method

To be able to answer my aim and my questions I have used a qualitative method with semistructured interviews based on a fixed interview pattern. I interviewed six male teacher students in PE, all in different stages of their education. Their age runs through 21-29 years and they come from different parts of Sweden. I used a strategic selection when choosing my informants.

    Results

All informants expressed some kind of taste for dance nowadays even if this wasn´t always the case. The dance segments in their education at GIH seems to be the factor that has influenced their taste for dance the most and they have all gotten a changed view of dance during their time at GIH. None of the informants had much experience of dance from before, not from their spare time nor from their own education in PE. Their comfort in dancing are in many cases connected to how secure they are about themselves rather than their competence in dance.

    Conclusions

Regardless of how much experience and what kind of experience from dance and movement to music the informants had it seems like their time on GIH is the biggest influencing factor on their taste for dance. The dance segments at GIH is the biggest influencing factor on the informants taste for dance and the experience that developed their taste for dance the most. Since all informants have gotten a changed view on dance during the education that most likely means their habitus has developed, regardless of age or other background factors. The informants who experience themselves as comfortable with dancing derive this to the fact that they feel secure with themselves while the ones who are not comfortable with dancing believe that this is connected to them feeling insecure with themselves.

Review of childhood pain highlights the role of negative stress.2019In: Acta Paediatrica, ISSN 0803-5253, E-ISSN 1651-2227, Vol. 108, no 12, p. 2148-2156Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

AIM: Recurrent pain of unknown origin is a major problem in children. The aim of the present review was to examine the hypothesis of negative stress as an aetiology of recurrent pain from different aspects.

METHODS AND RESULTS: Epidemiological studies, clinical experience and hormonal data give support for such a hypothesis. Negative stress as a tentative aetiology for recurrent pain is reviewed. Stress, muscular tension, the startle reaction and its tentative relation to pain is illuminated. Deviations of hormonal secretion supporting a stress aetiology is mentioned. The role of central sensitization for recurrent pain is discussed. Possible aetiological implications of recurrent pain as a local symptom or a general disorder are presented. Brain changes due to stress is shortly reviewed. Stress and pain in the clinic are highlighted. The importance of biological, psychological and social factors, as well as genetic elements, are-Ddiscussed.

CONCLUSION: Stress elicits neurobiological mechanisms. They may lead to many neurophysiological deviances. Increase of muscle tension and neuromuscular excitability and enhanced startle reaction may be of importance for recurring pain. The identification of stress as a primary cause of recurrent pain can have huge implications for understanding signs and treatment in clinical practice. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract [en]

Chronic negative stress may be the start of a progress of illness, that may end in serious troubles for the affected. In this Perspective we highlight the steps in such a progress, what we call a staircase of stress. This underlines the importance of recognition, understanding and therapeutic measures at an early stage of the stress disorders.

Children with chronic stress-induced recurrent muscle pain have enhanced startle reaction.2017In: European Journal of Pain, ISSN 1090-3801, E-ISSN 1532-2149, Vol. 21, no 9, p. 1561-1570Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Children with recurrent pain of negative chronic stress origin from different locations have a characteristic pattern of tender points in the temporal, trapezoid, great pectoral and abdominal muscles. We tested the hypothesis that the startle reaction is activated in these children and that some of the startle-activated muscles are related to the tender point pattern and the recurrent pain.

METHODS: In children/adolescents, aged 10-17 years, 19 with recurrent psychosomatic pain (PAIN) and 23 controls (CON) we measured and analysed resting activity and acoustic startle response with electromyography (EMG) for the muscles involved in the pattern of tender points and also the lumbar erector spinae.

RESULTS: The PAIN group showed higher resting activity and higher acoustic startle response values than the CON group for all six muscles together regarding the mean amplitude in the initial 200 ms, and during the burst of activity, and longer burst duration and shorter burst latency. For PAIN versus CON, all separate muscles showed generally higher values of EMG amplitudes and burst durations, and shorter latencies for the burst onset in all measures; with significance or strong trends for several parameters and muscles.

CONCLUSION: For the first time in children with recurrent psychosomatic pain, increased resting activity and potentiated startle response were demonstrated in the muscles involved in the stress tender point pattern.

SIGNIFICANCE: This study demonstrates in adolescents how recurrent pain of negative stress origin from the head, stomach, back and chest is related to increased startle reaction and increased muscular tension in these regions. This study contributes to the understanding of the mechanisms underlying the global burden of recurrent pain.

Barn med stressutlöst smärta hade kraftigare startle-reflex2017In: Läkartidningen, ISSN 0023-7205, E-ISSN 1652-7518, article id 114:ERZXArticle in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Increased muscle activity response during startle in children and adolescents with pain in the head, neck and abdomen due to stress2020Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Headache of stress etiology is a common, worldwide medical problem with high sick leave and large economic consequences. There is a need to improve the understanding of underlying neurobiological processes. Research show that headache of stress etiology often is one symptom in a complex of multiple pains and augmented widespread muscular tension with a specific pattern of tender points (1).

Objective and Method: We will present in children with recurrent stress related pain, some hormonal changes and electromyography (EMG) data, showing a novel and a missing link, regarding central and peripheral neurophysiological changes of significant importance for better understanding recurrent multiple pain including headache.

Results: During high acoustic signals, the startle reaction was shown, via EMG, to be potentiated, more easily and more often elicited in several muscles related to the pain, in 19 children with recurrent stress related pain in the head, neck and abdomen, diagnosed according to strict defined criteria (2), and compared to 21 matched controls. Also, higher resting muscle activity was found in these children as well as increased cortisol and decreased oxytocin.

Conclusion. Stressors evoke stress response for example in the amygdala, which can trigger and potentiate the startle reaction with amplified muscle excitability and tonus. These reactions and the increased cortisol and decreased oxytocin in those children are in accordance with findings of the right dominance of stress in the bi-cameral brain (3). These neurophysiological facts can be of importance for the understanding of clinical manifestation of headache and other pain and must be heeded in the treatment of patients with pain related to stress.

    Abstract [en]

For better understanding and better care of psychosomatic pain valid and reliable diagnostic criteria is a prerequisite. The startle reflex is of importance for the understanding of the stress induced pain and the increased excitability in several muscles. The pattern of increased muscle tension and tenderness that can be found in these patterns can be of valuable diagnostic support. Decreased oxytocin and increased cortisol is a sign of right brain dominance in stress and indicate psuchosomatic pain. The omega-3 and omega-6 changes are in indication metabolic pain mechanism of interest for future study. Treatment is reccomended to be guided by the knowledge here described.

    Abstract [en]

We discuss the aetiology of recurrent abdominal pain of non-organic origin, according to the Rome Criteria for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders and a psychogenic hypothesis. Stress activates the brain-gut axis, which is important for local gut symptoms, such as abdominal pain, but it also causes pain in other areas, including the head, back and chest. Our research has indicated that the startle reflex plays a dominant role in this stress-induced pain pattern, which is manifested in the whole body. Localised abdominal pain can be part of a general negative stress reaction that causes multiple pains in other areas of the body.

    ABSTRACT

Background: Recurrent pain of stress etiology is a common, worldwide problem with impaired quality of life and decreased school attendance. Research show that pain of stress etiology, often called psychosomatic pain, often is a complex of multiple pains, other symptoms and augmented widespread muscular tension with a specific pattern of tender points (1).

Objective and Method: We will in a clinical context present electromyography (EMG) data, showing a novel and a missing link, regarding central and peripheral neurophysiological changes of significant importance for better understanding recurrent multiple pain.

Results: During high acoustic signals, the startle reaction was shown, via EMG, to be potentiated, more easily and more often elicited in several muscles related to the pain, in 19 children with recurrent stress related pain in the head, neck and abdomen, diagnosed according to strict defined criteria (2), and compared to 23 matched controls. Also, higher resting muscle activity was shown. We will also present data showing increased cortisol and decreased oxytocin and increased risk for developing fibromyalgia in children with psychosomatic pain.

Conclusion. Stressors potentiated the startle reaction with increased muscle activity in rest and increased excitability. These reactions and increased cortisol and decreased oxytocin in those children are in accordance with findings of the right dominance of stress in the bi-cameral brain (3). These neurophysiological facts can be of importance for the understanding of clinical manifestation of recurrent pain and must be heeded in the treatment of patients with pain related to stress.
