MVPA-VO2max-Working Memory : A study about correlations between working memory and physical activity (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Aim
The aim of this study was to investigate if and in that case how aerobic exercise and level of physical activity correlates with cognitive ability for children in grades 6 and 8, at two schools.
The study was based on the following questions:
*How does children’s working memory correlate with their level of physical activity?
*How does children’s VO2max correlate with their working memory?
* How does gender affect the correlation between working memory and level of physical activity and VO2max?
Method
This study is based on pre-tests conducted as a part of a larger intervention study by Karolinska Institutet and the Swedish School of Sports And Health Sciences (GIH) in Stockholm. The study was based on 39 participants (14 boys and 25 girls) from 6th and 8th grade. While participants completed both cognitive and physical tests this study focuses on the cognitive verbal working memory test BSS(Letter-number sequencing test) and visual working memory Odd One Out test and the physical tests VO2max and accelerometer registration of physical activity level. The tests were conducted at GIH and were followed by seven days of wearing accelerometer for the participants.
Results
The results from pre-tests concerning the whole group shows that there are significant relationships between the cognitive variable BSS and participants' time in MVPA (moderate to high physical activity). Significant values were also found between BSS and gender. When performing the analyses separately for girls and boys, the correlation between BSS and MVPA got stronger for girls, and the significant for the boys did not occur. Significance was also found between the both variables identification and memory from the Odd One Out test compared to BSS. For boys, there was a significant association between BSS and VO2max, when this was stated in liter (L).
Conclusions
The results of this study indicated that for girls it is the activity levels rather than their aerobic fitness that correlate with their cognition. For boys, aerobic capacity rather than activity levels was shown to correlate with cognition. It is therefore important to individualize instruction in physical education and health to lift both aerobic fitness and physical activity levels of students.
