PE teachers strategies to motivate students to engage in physical activity (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to investigate how PE teachers describe their work in motivating students to be physically active within the subject of physical education in elementary school. The study also highlights the didactical strategies used by PE teachers and how the collaboration with other school staff and parents contributes to increasing students’ motivation. Theoretically, the study is based on Self-Determination Theory (SDT), focusing on autonomy, competence and relatedness. Six PE teachers with varying experience were interviewed in semi-structured interviews via Zoom. The results show that PE teachers actively work to strengthen student autonomy through choices and student influence, but they experience limitations due to the curriculum and large class sizes. Competence building strategies include differentiated exercises, clear progression and feedback. Grading is perceived as demotivating, as it shifts focus toward performance rather than learning. Collaboration with other staff and parents is seen as important, but at present it is underdeveloped in practice. The conclusion is that motivation for physical activity is fostered through autonomy, competence, and supportive relationships, but demotivating factors such as grading and limited collaboration restrict student opportunities to experience long-term motivation for physical activity.
