Matters at play? : a study of power interactions regarding childrens movement practices in Lilla Sportspegeln (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The connection between children, sports media and school is unexplored but a tangible triad of children's reality. The curiosity of this led to the purpose of this essay: to investigate and contribute to an increased understanding of how power relations and language use, in a sporting context, are expressed in interactions between adults and children in connection with children's movement practices in Lilla Sportspegeln – a Swedish television program about sports for children, 1983–2017, and whether these have changed over time. To fulfill the purpose and analyse when and how power was expressed and transformed, we investigated a total of thirty-two micro-situations distributed in chunks over the program's broadcast period. By combining Foucault's concept of power with conversation analysis (CA) and interactional sociolinguistics, we studied videotaped interactions between adults and children. We selected sports reportage and studio competitions, two recurring movement practices in the program, in accordance with their similarity in structure to interactions between teacher and student in educational activities. We observed and transcribed conversations and body language. Subsequent thematic analysis resulted in two themes, power tactics and linguistic forms of expression, where the former was underlying but in direct relation to the latter. Expressions of power were constant and preferentially initiated by the active adult while the child was reactive. Since consent-producing power prevailed, there were few conflict situations. Resistance and transformation of power relations were most common during the studio competitions of the 80s and 90s and consisted of situations disrupting normality. In the sports reportage, the children's initiation of power increased during the 10th century, when they were attributed roles that adults previously had. All power tactics were present throughout the period, but the variation of what was dominant changed, partly because the form of the investigated movement practices also changed. In conclusion, we discussed the interpretation of results based on, and compared to, teaching situations and power relations between the student and the teacher´s role in physical education and health.
