"...one would rather die than complain’’… : A narrative study of male and female students' experiences and perceptions of outdoor friluftsliv and the leadership role in friluftsliv (English)
Abstract [en]

Aim

The overall aim of the study was to increase knowledge, from a gender perspective, about male and female students' perceptions and conceptions of friluftsliv as well as their conceptions and experiences of a role as a leader within the framework of outdoor education. The specific research questions were:

(1)  How do female and male students describe their experiences in friluftsliv?

(2)  How do female and male students reflect of a role as a leader?

(3)  What conceptions about the role of a leader in friluftsliv are produced and/or reproduced?

Method The study is qualitative, utilizing narrative structuring as the method. Data collection consisted of five reflective essays written by female students and eight reflective essays written by male students. These texts were written and collected during a hiking trip as part of a university-level friluftslivs course. The reflective essays of the female students were woven into a collective narrative called "Eva," while the male students' essays were treated similarly and called "Adam." The narratives were then analyzed using Yvonne Hirdman's gender theory.

Results The study reveals both similarities and differences in the experiences of friluftsliv and perceptions of a role as a leader between female and male students. Differences primarily emerged in descriptions of challenging situations and concerns about their bodies. However, similar reflections are predominantly found in the narratives regarding experiences of nature and expectations of the role of a leader (such as managing the task and ensuring the well-being and motivation of the group).

Conclusion The study's results suggest that the construction of gender and the traits and roles historically assigned to women and men, which have created a gender order and a gender contract, have changed or are changing within the context studied, that is, participating in a course on leading a hike in friluftsliv. Only traces of reproduction of gender patterns (domination or subordination) appear in the narratives that have been analyzed.

Abstract [sv]

(1) Hur beskriver kvinnliga respektive manliga studenter sina upplevelser i friluftsliv?
