“SAIF is life” och vice versa : En kvalitativ ekologisk studie om intrateam competition inom en svensk gräsrots fotbollsklubb (Swedish)
Abstract [en]

Study aim and research questions

Through a holistic ecological approach grounded in Gibson’s theory of affordances (1979) the study aimed to explore and illustrate the sociocultural factors within the wide context shaping the form of life at a grassroots football club (SAIF), with a focus on intrateam competition. The study sought to identify and characterise the sociocultural practices regarding intrateam competition within SAIF and their role in shaping the environment-player relationship. The specific research questions were: 1) what are the sociocultural practices within the macro context that influence the form of life at SAIF? 2) How do sociocultural practices within SAIF influence intrateam competition? 3) How do these sociocultural practices shape the environment-player relationship, specifically in terms of the affordances perceived by players during intrateam competition?

Method

The study is qualitative and adopted focused ethnography as the method. Data collection consisted of a historical contextual analysis, semi-structured interviews, and field notes from an 8-week dual role as observant-participant. Through a reflexive analysis data was thematically coded and presented. The analysis was carried out through a holistic ecological perspective with particular focus on how intentional actions and perception of affordances were shaped by value-directedness within the study context.

Results

The study illustrates how sociocultural practices within the microsystem resonate with those in the macro. Importantly, this is seen to constrain players’ intentional actions and perceptions of affordances. Furthermore, the roles of the coach and teammates were highlighted as key factors in how intrateam competition was perceived to shape the environment-player relationship.

Conclusion

Practitioners should be encouraged to adopt a holistic and critical awareness of the ways in which sociocultural practices shape players’ interaction and perceptions of affordances, particularly for coaches regarding their own role in amplifying, maintaining and dampening intrateam competition.

Abstract [sv]
