Purpose and research questions

The aim for this study is to determine how teachers in physical education handles students who do not want to participate in the ongoing teaching.

- What are the teachers' experiences with students who do not participate in the physical education lessons?

- Are there any strategies that teachers use to engage students who do not participate in the physical education lessons?

- In what way does the teachers work in practice to ensure that the inactive students achieve a passing grade in physical education?

Method

The study used a qualitative method by semi-structured interviews with seven teachers who teach in physical education. The data from the interviews was then analyzed with the self determination theory. The teachers in this study were chosen through a convenience sample and all worked at secondary schools in Stockholm and the surrounding area.

Results

All teachers in this study had experiences with students who did not want to participate in the physical education lessons. The strategies which the teachers use for these students vary depending on the reason why the student does not participate. Some students have some problems with mental health disorders and the teachers approach the students from these conditions, and others may have physical problems, like injury, and then the teachers approach the students from those conditions. Another reason for students to not participate may be the lack of motivation or that the student finds certain activities too exhausting. The teachers work with different adaptations according to the students to give them the best conditions to achieve a passing grade in physical education.

Conclusion

By building good relationships with the students and getting to know them, the teacher can in a better way set up a strategy to make the students feel safe and motivated to participate in the physical education lessons. Adjustments to the students and good relationships thus seem to be two key strategies to get as many students as possible to participate and be able to achieve a passing grade.

Syfte och frågeställningar

Syftet med studien var att undersöka hur lärare hanterar inaktiva elever på idrottslektionerna utifrån följande frågeställningar:

- Vad är lärares upplevelser av inaktiva elever på idrott- och hälsa lektionerna?

- Finns det någon strategi som lärare i idrott och hälsa har för att engagera inaktiva elever till den undervisning som bedrivs i idrott och hälsa?

- På vilket sätt arbetar lärarna i idrott och hälsa i praktiken för att se till att de inaktiva eleverna uppnår ett godkänt betyg i idrott och hälsa?

Metod

Studien använde en kvalitativ metod genom semistrukturerade intervjuer med sju legitimerade lärare som undervisar i ämnet idrott och hälsa. Datan från intervjuerna analyserades med hjälp av self determination theory. De intervjuade lärare valdes genom ett bekvämlighetsurval och samtliga arbetade på gymnasieskolor i Stockholm med omnejd.

Resultat

Samtliga lärare i studien har varit med om elever som inte är aktiva i undervisningen i idrott och hälsa. De strategier lärarna använder för dessa elever varierar beroende på anledningen till elevens inaktivitet. Vissa elever har problem med psykisk ohälsa och då bemöter lärarna dessa elever utifrån det, medans andra elever inte är aktiva på grund av fysiska problem, som exempelvis en skada, och då bemöts de utifrån de förutsättningarna. En annan anledning tillinaktivitet kan vara bristen på motivation hos eleven eller att eleven tycker att vissa aktiviteter är fysiskt jobbiga. Lärarna arbetar med olika anpassningar efter eleverna för att ge dem de bästa förutsättningarna till att uppnå ett godkänt betyg i ämnet.

Slutsats

Genom att bygga goda relationer med eleverna och lära känna dem kan läraren på ett bättre sätt lägga upp en strategi för att få eleverna att känna sig trygga och motiverade till att delta i undervisningen. Anpassningar efter eleverna och goda relationer tycks alltså vara två nyckelstrategier för att få så många elever som möjligt att vilja delta i undervisning och kunna uppnå ett godkänt betyg.
