Arbete med psykisk ohälsa inom elitidrott för elittränare: En intervjustudie med svenska elittränare

Abstract [sv]
Syfte
Syftet med studien var att undersöka hur svenska elittränare ser på sin roll och sitt arbete när det kommer till elitidrottares psykiska ohälsa. Studien har utgått från följande frågeställningar: (1) På vilket sätt arbetar elittränare med att förebygga och upptäcka psykisk ohälsa hos elitidrottare? (2) Hur arbetar elittränare med elitidrottare som har drabbats av psykisk ohälsa? (3) Hur ser elittränare på sitt ansvar kring psykisk ohälsa hos elitidrottare?
Metod
En kvalitativ forskningsmetod i form av semistrukturerade intervjuer utfördes med fem elitidrottstränare. En semistrukturerad intervjuguide konstruerades och användes vid intervjuerna. Intervjuerna spelades in, transkriberades och resultaten analyserades genom en tematisk analysmetod.
Resultat
Studien visar att elittränarna ser sin tränarroll som viktig när det kommer till elitidrottares psykiska ohälsa. Resultat som förekom var att elittränare arbetar för att förebygga uppkomsten av psykisk ohälsa genom att kommunicera om psykisk ohälsa, försöka bidra positivt till idrottares välmående samt upptäcka tecken och symptom på psykisk ohälsa. Deras ansvar handlade främst om att upptäcka psykisk ohälsa men även att bidra på ett stödjande sätt till elitidrottare som har drabbats. Slutligen framkom det att kontakten med andra professioner var betydelsefull.
Slutsats
Utifrån resultaten konstaterades att elittränare i förebyggande syfte arbetar för att ha en regelbunden kommunikation mellan sig och idrottare. De försöker bygga goda relationer, skapa ett förtroende samt uppmuntrar till att samtala om idrottarens välmående. Elittränare är även uppmärksamma på symptom genom att söka efter förändringar i beteenden hos idrottare genom kroppsspråk. De har utvecklingssamtal med idrottare samt försöker bidra med stöd till drabbade idrottare genom att uppmuntra till att ta hjälp och vägleda till annan profession. Det främsta ansvaret verkar handla om det förebyggande arbetet, sökandet efter symptom och stödjande arbete. Mer utbildning konstaterades kunna bidra till utveckling av elittränares arbete med elitidrottares psykiska ohälsa.

Aim
The purpose of the study is to investigate how Swedish elite coaches view their role and work when it comes to elite athletes' mental illness. The study has been based on the following questions: (1) In what way do elite coaches work to prevent and detect mental illness in elite athletes? (2) How do elite coaches work with elite athletes who have suffered from mental illness? (3) How do elite coaches view their responsibility regarding mental illness in elite athletes?
Method
A qualitative research method in the form of semi-structured interviews was conducted with five elite sports coaches. A semi-structured interview guide was constructed and used in the interviews. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and the results analyzed through a thematic method.
Results
The study shows that elite coaches see their coaching role as important when it comes to elite athletes' mental illness. The results that occurred were that elite coaches work to prevent the onset of mental illness by communicating about mental illness, trying to contribute positively to athletes' well-being and detecting signs and symptoms of mental illness. Their responsibility was primarily to detect mental illness but also to contribute in a supportive way to elite athletes who have been affected. Finally, it emerged that contact with other professions was significant.
Conclusion
Based on the results, it was found that elite coaches work preventively to have a regular communication between themselves and athletes. De tries to build good relationships, create trust and encourages conversations about the athlete's well-being. Elite coaches also pay attention to symptoms by searching for changes in the behaviors of athletes through body language. De have development talks with athletes and try to contribute support to affected athletes by encouraging help and guiding to another profession. The primary responsibility seems to be about prevention, the search for symptoms and supportive work. More training was found to contribute to the development of elite coaches' work with elite athletes' mental illness.
