Baseball, glima and Gotlandic sport: An analysis of the demonstration sports in the 1912 Stockholm Olympics2018In: Diagoras: International Academic Journal on Olympic Studies, Vol. 2, p. 103-122Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to analyse the demonstration sports (baseball, glima and Gotlandic sport) into the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. Who took the initiative for the demonstration sports? The IOC or the Swedish Organising Committee? How were the demonstration sports received by the public and the press, and what was their legacy? The study is based mainly on primary sources from the 1912 Stockholm Olympics’ archive. The 1912 Stockholm Olympics has been well explored, mainly by Swedes and internationals, and this gives a good picture of the 1912 Stockholm Olympics from different perspectives. On the other hand, research into the demonstration sports in the Olympic Games is clearly limited and there is thus a great need for further studies. This current study covers just a small part of this need. The results show that in 1912 there was no considered strategy on the part of either the IOC or the Swedish Organising Committee concerning the demonstration sports. The initiative for the demonstration sports came from individual representatives of each type of sport, and the Swedish organisers were positive towards three of those proposed: baseball, glima and Gotlandic sport. The Swedish organisers had control over which demonstration sports would be included in the programme. This meant that the choice of demonstration sports lay beyond the control of the 1912 IOC, but this would change in the 1900s. During the games they were given limited attention at most, both publicly and in the press. The demonstration sports were removed from the Olympic programme before the 1992 Olympic Games.

    Abstract [en]

Housewife or Physical Education Teacher? Or Both? Female Physical Education Teachers and the Welfare State, 1932–1952 • The purpose of the article is to analyse the occupational careers and lifestyles of 32 female physical education teachers during the period 1932–1973. The results show that women could work both as physiotherapists and as physical education teachers. Many chose the former, which in Central Institute of Gymnastics' (Gymnastiska centralinstitutet, GCI) own historical writing has been reduced in favor of the physical education teachers. The women came from the middle or upper middle class of society. They were around 20 years old when they started the two-year education at GCI, which attracted students from all over the country. They could combine marriage and children with work, even though it meant duplication and difficulty in bringing together the so-called "life puzzle." Unlike many other women at this time, the physical education teachers chose the occupational career instead of becoming full time housewives. Their attitude can be explained by the occupational and caring character of the profession, but also with the strong loyalty that existed in the group and the GCI-spirit.

Idrottshistorisk avhandling bryter ny mark: recension av doktorsavhandlingen I ständig strävan efter framgång av Daniel Alsarve2014In: Idrottsforum.org/Nordic sport science forum, ISSN 1652-7224, no 30 oktArticle, book review (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Women, careers and family: A study of the professional careers and lives of Swedish female gymnastics directors around the year 1900

This article analyses the professional careers of Swedish female gymnastics directors around the turn of the nineteenth century by means of a collective biographical study of the 25 women who graduated from the Royal Central Institute of Gymnastics (RCIG) in Stockholm in 1893. The institute was held in high repute in Sweden and abroad and was one of the first institutes in Sweden to provide higher professional education for women.

The investigation is based primarily on the unique correspondence between the women. A correspondence book circulated among them between 1893 and 1943 and it contains a total of almost 500 letters amounting to thousands of handwritten pages. The study shows that the women, who with the odd exception came from the upper echelons of society, had good opportunities to pursue a career after graduating from the RCIG. As graduates they earned a double degree and were qualified to work as both physical education teachers and as physiotherapists. This double professional authorization meant that the prospect of obtaining work was good in both Sweden and abroad. Their services were requested throughout the world.

The labour market for gymnastics directors is thus an early example, maybe the first, of a well-functioning international labour market for Swedish women with higher professional education. No less than 16 out of 25 women made their way abroad to work during the first decade after graduation. There are several reasons for the women’s ability to make a career. The treatment methods of Swedish gymnastics – physical education and physiotherapy – were the height of fashion at the turn of the nineteenth century and there was great demand for the RCIG graduates. There was also a large international network of Swedish gymnastics directors. The women remained faithful to their choice of occupation, even if their career tended to be discontinued upon marriage. When they graduated in 1893 none of the women were married. Half of them married later on. In most cases marriage had a negative effect on their professional careers; family life and a professional career could not be combined.
