    Abstract [sv]

    Syfte

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract

    Aim

The aim of this study has been to examine the perception of assessment criteria in the grading of Physical education in relation to Swedish, Social studies and Mathematics among girls and boys in Nature and Society programme (NS) from a gender perspective. This has been examined through using the following questions:

    • How do high school students at the NS programme experience the assessment in Physical education in relation to other subjects in school?

    • Which specific terms do the students experience they have to achieve in the various grades in Physical education, Social studies, Mathematics and Swedish?

    • How do the students perceive that an equal assessment is made in the chosen subjects?

From this, we will interpret how students challenge or reproduce the gender order in their discussion of assessment.

    Method

This study has had an qualitative approach and four focus group interviews have been carriedout with second year students at the NS programme. We used a strategic selection for the selected target group. To understand and interpret students' reasoning in our results, we have used the gender theory of Yvonne Hirdman and Raewyn Connell.

    Results

The main result obtained in our study indicates that the students value the relations betweenthe chosen subjects differentially. Physical education as the lowest in the hierarchy and Mathematics as the highest. In between are Social studies, and Swedish. With this setting it is also difficult for the students to define what they should learn in Physical education. This is not seen as a problem in Mathematics. Part of the assessment, according to students, is based on their level of interest and behavior. Behaviors, characteristics and interests of the students are gendered which also becomes a part of the assessment. Interest in Physical education is attributed to the boys, which leads to both sexes allowing them to dominate Physical education.

    Conclusion

The students in this study rarely negotiate their gender identities, especially in areas of interest. This, according to us, limits both girls and boys. All actors at the school in this study helps to create and maintain the gender system. Discussing the grading and assessment are ways of concretizing it. According to the students is there a lack of aim in Physical educationin contrast to Social studies, Mathematics and Swedish. The consequence of these arguments is according to us that the legitimacy of Physical education is minor then the other subjects in our study. However due to our result and previous science do high grades in Physical education bring higher status above all to the boys.

    Abstract [sv]

    Syfte

Dialogues of Dominance and Division: Skaters and Skater Girls Juxtaposing Gender2010In: Centers and Peripheries in Sport: Part 2.The Development of Women Sport: Separate but not Equal / [ed] Aage Radmann, 2010Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Skateboarding is known as a predominately male activity; however, there are female skateboarders and they are growing in number internationally. The purpose of this paper is to analyse how female gender and feminist issues appear and are negotiated by female skateboarders in ethnographically documented dialogues in a local setting. The dialogues are historically, socially and culturally contextualised invoking mediated discourses on female skateboarding. My assumption is that mediated discourses interact with local practice in an intricate way. This paper will hopefully shed some light on this interaction as well as works on femininity (and masculinity) in skateboarding and other board sports. In addition how female attendance is promoted. Theoretically, the paper draws on post structurally influenced cultural studies and theories of gender. The paper discusses practices of gender division and images of girls and women in board sports and their media from a feminist perspective. In this context, inviting pain as a girl has been interpreted as a way of challenging unappreciated forms of femininity. Accidents and falls are portrayed in niche media, both in print and television programmes, as evidence of courage and authenticity. However, there are alternatives to the aggressive femininity in recent media forms, such as blogs and personal web pages. But replacing one alternative of femininity with another raises new questions. The ambiguities of discourses put girls and women in a position where they are empowered subjects using their own micro-media, and, at the same time, tend to preserve ‘the separate-and-different-cultures model’ when it comes to gender.

Good ethnography smells bad: On aesthetic experience in qualitative research2008In: Sveriges antropologförbunds årliga konferens (SANT): Visuell kultur, 2008Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aesthetic learning processes are being notified in current Swedish pedagogical research. The philosophical term aesthetics is used in multiple modes, some of them borrowing an agenda from the studies of fine art, some more with inspiration from cultural studies and popular culture. In this emerging field both ethnography and every-day-aesthetics are in focus. Despite new ways of doing ethnography the results still tend to look (!) like traditional ethnography. Field-notes saturated with sensuous and stinking data; e.g. moist socks, sweaty t-shirts and car fumes, still tend to depend upon written texts and photography as scientific proof. Moreover ethnography is still judged against a positivistic framework drawing from natural science. Is a change required? And in that case, can the future of visual anthropology challenge this hegemonic scientific paradigm?

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Skateboard girls: On power, senses and affective embodiment.2009In: ESA 2009.: European Society or European Societies?, 2009Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

As one of the many claimed turns in social sciences lately, we experience (sic!) a corporeal one and as consequence we now know of a sensual revolution. Within that framework this paper discusses female skateboarding and its sensuous appearance. Female skateboarders in Sweden are using their bodies to negotiate power. In so doing their performing bodies are sensing subjects but also sensational objects. Bodies are where senses and affect meet with cultural and social assumptions. Bodies express and perform, bodies fail and succeed, bodies beam in pride and are put in place. Theoretical inspiration comes from various areas such as girlhood studies, the anthropological research on the senses in culture, and the psychology of affect.

Style in physical activity2008In: Bonds and Communities. Young people and their social ties.: The 10th Nordic Youth Research Information Symposium, 2008, p. 58-Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aesthetic expressions in youth culture have been studied extensively. For the British CCCS and its followers the concept of style is regularly used to explain dress codes, hair fashion and other physical appearances. Sub culture is an often-used term, which enclose these types of expressions, in addition frequently connected to certain kinds music. Lately a growing number of studies on sub culture and sport have been presented. This implies an interest in a slightly different aspect of style – the one focusing more on style in physical activity. The leaderless boarding culture revolves primarily around style and physical bodily activity, in contrast to punk for example, which is held together by style and music. Thus it can be argued that identity through board sports is more clearly incorporated through physical performance. This presentation attempts to fill some of the gap in research around style in physical activity. It focuses bodily aesthetic expressions in skateboarding and the concept of style in relation to the moving body. Style in both senses mentioned above, communicates and creates both bonds and communities. Building on empirical studies on skateboarding in Sweden between 1978-2002, it is argued that also style in physical activity is significant for the construction of cultural and social values. Moreover style in this sense has a highly performative aspect.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Aim: The purpose of this study was to describe and analyze high school student’s perceptions of how assessment and grading is done in physical education, and if there were any gender differences. The research questions were: 1. What perception do students have about when assessment and grading is done? 2. What perception do students have about what they will be assessed and graded on? 3. How do students perceive teachers way of informing about assessment and grading? 4. What is the potential difference between boys and girls perception of grading and assessment?

Method: A quantitative method was used to answer the purpose of the study; a questionnaire with closes-ended questions. A total of 196 high school students answered the questionnaire, of which 117 were boys and 79 were girls. The participants were recruited by a convenience and coincidence selection. Only a few internal mortalities occurred.

Results: The results showed that students believed themselves to be assessed and graded in more ways than what is listed in the current curriculum. The majority also believed that they were being assessed all the time during the lessons. Despite the findings the students thought that their teachers were giving clear information on assessment and grading. There was a tendency (p=0.052), which showed that the boys had a better understanding than what the girls had about the rating requirements.

Conclusions: Students knowledge about assessment and grading was contradicted to what is stated in the curriculum, but the reason for this discrepancy is beyond the scope of this work. The students indicated that they were assessed constantly, indicating a lack of formative assessment by the teachers. Girls and boys were shown to have about equal understanding of the assessment and grading of the subject, suggesting that there were no significant differences depending on gender.

Vilken kille är inte homofob?: En kvalitativ studie om ungdomars syn på genus inom dans2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

    Aim

The aim of this essay is to do a gender analysis of the starting-points in SOU 2002:5 “Actionplan for increased health in working life”. My questions are: How is gender constructed in the investigator Jan Rydh´s starting-points for the official government investigation “Actionplan for increased health in working life”? What categories/designations are made to describe different people in the text? Which models of explantions does Jan Rydh raise in his starting-points? What consequences will the categories/designations and the models of explanations have on Rydh’s analysis of the health problems in working life?

    Method

I have chosen to do a textanalysis of the startingpoints in SOU 2002:5, which are presented in chapter two. I have used different research studies in order to analyse SOU 2002:5. These texts have been my empirical material. I have examined contradictions; the way Rydh handles different conceptions and which factors he regards as having an effect on health. I have also analysed how this appears from a gender theoretical perspective.

    Results and conclusions

Today almost twice as many women as men are on sick leave, despite this Jan Rydh´s text appears to be gender neutral and it deals with individuals. It is not the separation of sex that is the problem in the text, but the gender neutral conceptions “individual” and “employer” that the text has it focus on. Rydh writes in his starting-points that individuals have different prerequisites in life, which affect the sick leave. The problem today as Rydh sees it is that employers pay the same fee in spite of different efforts to decrease sick leave. Since the division of home labour has not been recognized in Rydh´s text the picture of women´s health is left without nuances. Women’s subordination is today a general problem that leads to decreased health among women. Women are found, to a greater extent than men in low-paid jobs; working enviroments are often adapted to male standards. Women often have a greater total working load since they have a larger responsibility for family and home. In spite of this Rydh dismisses general reasons for increased sick leave. To reduce the differences in health and increase health in the working enviroment research has shown that it is important to acknowledge the effect that gender has on health.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

The study aims to clarify female teachers knowledge and experience of working in a male dominated profession as a school sports teacher. The study will answer the following questions.

    • Why have the teachers chosen to work as a school sports teacher?
    • How do the teachers get affected by the fact that there are few female colleagues in the subject of school sports?
    • How do the teachers get affected by working in an environment with an overrepresentation of men?

    Method

Eight female school sports teachers were hand-picked with certain criterias. With a qualitative focus, this study used semi-structured interviews in order to reach a deeper understanding of the knowledge and experience of working in the subject of school sports. Historian Yvonne Hirdmans gender system and stereotypes model was used to investigate what happens when women enter the male dominated profession as school sports teacher.

    Results

The results of the study showed that the teachers work with school sports because of their interest in sports. The women are not affected by the fact that there are fewer female than male teachers in the subject of school sports. They feel like a minority in club sports. The women highlight, the lack of interest in the profession among girls and correlates it to the existing jargon in club sports. The females are satisfied with their current working situation, but they get affected by working in a male dominated environment because they have to assert themselves. Also, some of the women believe that if they would have opposite sex, according to their knowledge and experience, they would work with sports, but they were not convinced that it would be in school sports and few of them believe that they probably would get offered other jobs in club sports, for example national head coach or club director.

    Conclusion

The eight women chose to work in school sports because of their interest in sports. The women are not affected by the fact that there are few female teachers in the subject of school sports, but they feel like a minority during club sports.

    Abstract [en]

    Aim:

The aim of the study on a more general level was to illuminate how players and leaders in an adolescent male ice hockey team constructs and stage masculinities. Due to recent shifts in the society regarding the norms of normality and masculinity the aim of the study was to examine how this affects the construction of masculinity. The following questions guided the investigation: How does players and leaders relate to orthodox and inclusive ideals of masculinity? What norms regarding sexuality become clear in the team? What norms regarding ethnicity become clear in the team?

    Methodology:

The methods used in the study were participant observations of an adolescent male elite hockey team and qualitative interviews with four of the players in the team. The team consisted of players between 15-17 years old and some of the players had another ethnicity than Swedish. The observations and the interviews were analyzed by a deductive approached from the theories of queer theory, hegemonic masculinity theory and inclusive masculinity theory, and also with a thematic content analysis.

    Result:

The results indicate that much of the activities in the adolescent male hockey team were about producing players to take the next step of their careers. It also seems like the players were prepared to expose their bodies to a lot of pressure that sometimes lead to injuries. Some of the players talked about the pressure that makes them play with injuries were the chance to show off their abilities was one particular reason for doing this. Some statements are also said about the  fighting in the sport were players told that these fights occur due to the fun of it and also because of the trash talk that is occurring on the ice. There is also some examples of how heterosexuality is normative in the team and is emphasized by the players and the leaders. However two of the interviewed players imply that they would not mind if some of the players in the team came out as gay. To some degree a Swedish ethnicity is the unproblematic origin and players from other countries sometimes gets commentaries because of their ethnicity.

    Abstract [en]

As a result of a historically anchored relationship between the Swedish state and the sports movement, gender equality has been a prioritized area of interest in Swedish sports since the 1970s. Despite long-term work in this field, research indicates a notable gap between what is said and done at the central level and locally. Research also indicates attitude problems; gender equality is often seen as an insignificant or unnecessary issue.

This thesis seeks to relate to and analyze this development. Answers are sought via male sport coaches and leaders. This approach is motivated by the fact that gender equality-related sport research in Sweden seldom focuses on men and masculinities. At the same time men have been overrepresented as power holders and decision makers, and gender equality has consequently been constructed as a women’s issue. By means of a post-structural discourse analysis, the aim is to investigate constructions of gender equality in interviews with 47 leaders selected from seven sports. How is gender equality constructed in terms of meanings of and standpoints in relation to the concept, and which discourses set the frames for these constructions? Which subject positions are articulated?

Results show that gender equality is given many different meanings in the interviews and that these meanings are produced in line with three discourses: a women’s rights discourse (semi-essentialism, structural feminism, a quantitative and qualitative support for women’s sport), a gender critical discourse (constructionism, structural feminism, “women can”, deconstructions of femininities) and a liberal discourse (“sport for all”, individualism, gender neutrality). Furthermore, four subject positions are distinguished: the skeptic, the cynic, the women rightist and the norm critic position. When the results are related to the production of gender equality policies four aspects are discussed, 1) relations between discourses (the discourses generate contradictory interpretations of sport, subjectivity, gender and equality), 2) men and gender equality, 3) the relatively substantial lack of interest in gender equality in the interviews and 4) sport and pluralism.

One conclusion in the thesis is that the women’s rights discourse dominates and that the liberal discourse is marginalized in the interviews. Further, it is suggested that an elaboration and a more frequent practice of the gender critical discourse could be useful in the development of the gender equality project in Swedish sport.

The sceptic, the cynic, the women’s rights advocate and the constructionist: male leaders and coaches on gender equity in sport2020In: International Journal of Sport Policy and Politics, ISSN 1940-6940, E-ISSN 1940-6959, Vol. 12, no 3, p. 333-347Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Research about sport and gender equity has taken various forms in different historical and scientific contexts but a general conclusion is that sport still is male-dominated terrain. Why is this, despite decades of gender equity work and initiatives? Here, answers were sought through interviews with 47 male power holders - leaders and coaches - in Swedish sport. Men from seven sports were interviewed. The aim was to, by means of a Foucauldian discourse analysis, explore how 'gender equity' was interpreted and valued: how do the leaders and coaches position themselves, and how are they positioned, in relation to gender equity? The findings show that four subject positions are articulated: the sceptic, the cynic, the women's rights advocate and the constructionist. The sceptic raises doubts about the reasonableness and fairness of gender equity, the cynic constructs gender equity as something unrealistic or impossible, the women's rights advocate articulates a semi-essential and quantitatively oriented support for gender equity, and the constructionist voice a norm-critical approach. We conclude that the constructionist probably is more aligned with the gender equity objectives of both Swedish and international sport organising bodies than the women's rights advocate, but that more distinct and detailed norm-critical approaches to gender equity are required ahead. A more successful implementation of gender equity initiatives is related to changed interpretations of and attitudes towards the fundamentals of gender equity work among those who are to realise it, but also to clarifications of what 'gender equity' means and why it is important.

    Abstract

    Aim

The aim with this study was to examine gender patterns and heteronormativity in the school subject physical education and health from a teacher and student perspective.

    • How do the teachers work to counteract gender patterns in their physical and health education?
    • How do the students experience their teachers counteracting gender patterns in their physical and health education?
    • How can the teachers’ in physical and health education and the students’ experiences of gender patterns connect to heteronormativity in physical education?

    Method

This study was performed with a qualitative method where openly directed interviews were used to find out how teachers and students experience gender patterns and heteronormativity in the subject physical and health education. Three teachers were interviewed individually and three interviews were performed with students in focus groups. All participants recieved a mail with information before the interviews, where they were informed how the study would be done and ethical considerations. The interviews were transcribed and analysis of the data was made by thematically categorizing the material.

    Results

Every teacher in this study works to counteract gender patterns by using different didactic tools in their teaching, which is confirmed by the students. This could mean that they, for example, think about using an inclusive language. The students experience that there are expectations of them, based on gender and that heteronormativity can occur in the education, mainly in dance. The students also experience that there is a difference between teachers that are recently graduated and teachers that graduated a long time ago.

    Conclusions

Even though teachers have an awareness of how they can work to counteract gender patterns and heteronormativity it seems that it is a challenge to apply it in practice. Students believe that both heteronormativity and gender patterns can occur in teaching, but still feel that teachers make concious choices to counteract this.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this dissertation is to disseminate the construction of masculinity and femininity in sport and sports related research. The major research question is how sport and sports related research function, on the one hand in the production of 'women' and 'men' as objects and subjects of knowledge, and on the other as a technique or procedure for regulating men's and women's behaviour and ways of reflecting upon themselves. The interest is thus aimed at how gendered subjects are made. Of particular interest is the concept of equal opportunities between women and men in sport as a new way of creating sexual/gender difference. Michel Foucault's concept 'governmentality', roughly the relation between the histories of the practices of the self and the practices of government, serves as one important tool in this work.

Empirically, the study derives from 22 interviews with teenagers and coaches in track and field athletics. The interviews comprises of three themes: 'me and other boys and girls in sport', 'the body' and 'the coach'. The teenagers' answers can simultaneousl be seen as reproducing and opposing conventional perceptions of men as autonomous and goal achievement oriented, and women as dependent and relation oriented. What historical conditions have made this situation possible?

A genealogical study of the construction of sport, and of masculinity and femininity in sport and sports related research, show that a patriarchal governmentality, where young men were seen as the only 'appropriate' competitive sportsmen, have successively been transformed into a social-liberal and a neo-liberal governmentality. In patriarchal discourses, a strong emphasis is put on gender differentiation and 'seriousness' (i.e. competition and performance) in sport. The sporting subject is constructed as a decidedly masculine subject. In social-liberal discourses, an emphasis is put on social relations and fellowship, and the sporting subject is constructed as a gender-neutral (and somewhat disembodied) subject. In neo-liberal discourses, the subject is constructed as an individual, however gender-specific (and heterosexual), subject. Neo-liberal does not emphasise difference between subjects (social and physical difference) but difference inside the subject (individual). Modern power relations aim at procedures that occur inside the subject and not so much at what takes place between the subjects.

The concept of gender equity between women and men has grown strong in sports discourse since the 70s. It can be seen as a practical strategy of guaranteeing women and men the opportunities to do the same things - competitive sport for instance. At the same time it performs two distinct and clearly differentiated gendered subjects, to be equalised. As such gender equity policies might be preceived as an apparatus that produces and regulates sexual/gender difference.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the chapter is to describe and analyse how the ‘doing’ of masculinity has been performed in Sweden over time, and within two cultural contexts—that of organized (mainly competitive) sport, and physical education in school. Situated within the development of the Swedish welfare state, the research shows that the concept and idea of gender equality is largely a hegemonic sociocultural ideal. At the political and sociocultural level, there is an ongoing movement towards gender-neutral ways of constructing and understanding bodies as well as sport and physical education in Sweden. At the same time the research shows that on an interrelational level, this picture is less clear, as physical education teachers, athletes, coaches and others seemingly tend to talk about gender equality as an ideal, but sometimes fail to practise this in day-to-day living. Nevertheless, embedded in and part of social life at large, the chapter argues that relational patterns are, and will hopefully continue to be, greatly influenced by and part of the Swedish welfare system, which by necessity influences men’s choices in contemporary Sweden concerning how to ‘do’ masculinity and physical activity in relation to more gender inclusive configurations.

    Abstract [en]

Heteronormativity and the idea of binary sex constrain sport and exercise as well as many gender equality measures that are implemented in sport and exercise contexts. This strongly affects trans people's opportunities to participate. The purpose of the paper is to explore trans performativity in relation to gender equality efforts in sport and exercise. Through interviews with ten trans individuals, we untangle how trans is, in the words of Karen Barad, produced in and through agential intra-actions of multiple apparatuses of bodily production. Our diffractive analysis shows how meaning comes to matter in sport and exercise regarding what trans 'is,' who and how one can identify as 'trans,' and in what ways trans individuals experience inclusion and exclusion. The study demonstrates challenges with reconciling gender equality and trans inclusion in sport and exercise contexts given current conceptualizations of sport and exercise, gender equality, and trans.

Who decides how sportswomen should look and behave?: Towards a gendersensitive critical approach2014In: Women and sport, Stockholm: SISU idrottsböcker , 2014Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

What if we told you that the texts collected in this project (Women and Sport) might serve to maintain stereotypical views about women in sport? What if we told you that scientifi c knowledge often cannot meet or fulfill the expectations placed on it of being able to support and promote women’s participation and performance in elite competitive sports? What if we told you that sports science is, in fact, not equipped to deal with sports practice on a practical and individual level? our aim in saying this is not to disavow the impact of sports science on the development of women’s sport, but rather to warn against an overly simplistic approach to research. Both of us are researchers; that makes us confident in confronting the most obvious problems arising from the use of scientific knowledge in the promotion of women’s sport during the past decades. In this chapter, we highlight the significance of the ‘practical knowledge’ of coaches and its sometimes ambiguous relation with scientific knowledge about sex and gender differences.

Juggling with gender. How gender promotes and prevents the learning of a specific movement activity among secondary school students2021In: Gender and Education, ISSN 0954-0253, E-ISSN 1360-0516, Vol. 33, no 5, p. 531-546Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Research on motor learning frequently reports gender differences. However, there seems to be limited tools in the research with which to make use of these insights in educationally relevant ways. Movement learning and gender are intensely researched in movement education research, but the issues rarely intersect in the literature. The purpose of this article is to shed light on how movement learning and gender norms intersect when students learn to juggle. A pedagogical intervention in two secondary school classes (15?16 year olds) was explored ethnographically. Two composite narratives illustrate how gender norms affected the juggling practise to a different extent in the two classes, indicating that these norms are highly contextual. Learning to juggle seems to include aspects of both ?doing boy? and ?doing girl?, i.e. regarding respectively controlling objects in space and persistent practising. The findings indicate some ways in which teachers can help students transcend traditional gender norms.

Heterotopias in physical education: towards a queer pedagogy?2014In: Gender and Education, ISSN 0954-0253, E-ISSN 1360-0516, Vol. 26, no 2, p. 135-150Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article sets out to outline how prevailing gender structures can be challenged in physical education (PE) by exploring queer potentials in an event that took place during a dancing lesson in an upper secondary PE class. The event and its features were documented through video recording and post-lesson interviews with the teacher and some of the students. It is argued that the event can be seen as aheterotopia, according to Michel Foucault a ‘counter-site’ enabling the resistance to authority, where the production of normalcy was challenged. Furthermore, even though the event happened spontaneously, the authors suggest that it can show a way towards a queer pedagogy for PE through teaching paradoxically; it indicates a preferred ethos of the lesson and the use of conceptual tools by teachers and students that make them able to intervene in the production of normalcy.

    Becoming horseboy(s) - human-horse relations and intersectionality in equiscapes2019In: Leisure Studies, ISSN 0261-4367, E-ISSN 1466-4496, Vol. 38, no 3, p. 408-421Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Leisure studies have given scant regard to human-animal relations and intersectionality. In this paper, I respond to calls for research analysing leisure as a complex, multispecies phenomenon by exploring human-horse relations and intersectionality in boy's/men's equestrian stories through the concept of intra-activity and creative analytical writing. Thinking and writing through intra-activity brings insights into the co-constitution of humans and horses, as well as the entanglement of other power relations and social categories. The paper illustrates that becoming horseboy(s) is a process of material-discursive intra-activity where boys/men, by transcending the human-animal divide simultaneously transcend the female-male/masculine-feminine divide. Thus, engaging materially with horses can allow and encourage boys/men to be less constrained by dominant gender discourses. The paper also illustrates the importance of studying gender, not as a separate or primary category of privilege or inequality, but as one that is entangled with race, class, sexuality, age and other animals. I finally argue that bringing horses, as well as discourses, into discussions of the enactment of gender in leisure landscapes offers a productive site for elaborating the much-debated question, posed by feminist posthumanists, of the agency of matter.

Glitch i Idrottslandet: en kritiskkreativ undersökning av queeranden inom svensk idrott(svetenskap)2019Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The dominant story in critical sports research is that sport is characterised by heteronormativity and hegemonic masculinity norms. These norms are manifested in sexism, homophobia, homonegativity and racism which affect all athletes, regardless of identity. Although important, this is a story that risks reinforcing ideas of how all sport “is”. The thesis is a response to calls from feminist theorists and sport researchers who argue that we need to move away from a logic of negativity built into critical theory and instead put our analytical tools to the task of constructing alternative possible scenarios. The aim of the thesis is to explore what some major strands within contemporary feminist theory can accomplish in relation to dominating stories about gender, sexuality and scientific knowledge production in sport research. More specifically, I explore how the concepts of figuration and intra-action can open up for other possible sport (science) worlds.

The thesis consists of a frame-story and four articles, which in turn are based on three substudies. In the first substudy I interviewed boys and men who engage with horses and in horse riding. By engaging in a sport, equestrianism, that in Sweden is dominated by girls/women and female coded, they transgress and challenge – glitch – ideas of how Real sports boys/men should be, live and act. The interview stories from this study are enacted in various ways in article I and IV. In the second substudy I interviewed elite athletes with experiences of living non-straight and who in that way glitch heteronormativity in sports (sometimes also homonormativity). These stories make up the heart of the figurations presented in article II. In the third substudy, I explored athletic bodies that, due to intersex variations, glitch the idea that the only way of being a body (in sport) is to be male or female. This analysis is presented in article III.

The thesis is populated by horseguys who challenge stereotypical masculinity norms, sporting contexts that turn heteronormativity up-side-down and inside-out, athletic bodies that implode binary gender and a researcher I glitching a scientific (writing) genre. The figurations presented in the thesis open up for queering elsewheres, where engaging in sport can serve as a condition of possibility for same-sex attractions/relations and non-normative ways of being a boy/man, and where creative writing – in the form of fiction, poetry and genre mixing – can be used as a method of inquiry.

Through the concept of intra-action, the thesis also makes visible that “matter matters”. Firstly, I show how engaging materially with horses allow and encourage boys/men to be less constrained by dominant gender norms – in other words, that human-horse relations are entangled with, and affect, boys’ and men’s doing of gender. Secondly, I make visible how athletic bodies “strike back” in relation to ideas of binary gender, glitching a dominant medico-scientific story (in sport) telling us that the only way of being a body is to be male or female. Thirdly, I enact – in form and content – how the researcher is always already entangled in scientific knowledge production.

    Abstract [en]

Aim: The overall aim is to investigate how conditions of boys and men’s participation in equestrian sports activities are framed in stories about equestrian sports. In other words I´m interested in the construction of gender, or the ‘doing of gender’, in boys and men´s stories about equestrian sports. Research questions are: How is the gender bending of the boys and men treated in the stories– both inside and outside equestrian sports? Which norms and representations about gender and sexuality are visible in the stories? How do the boys and men position themselves in relation to prevailing gender- and sexuality norms?

Methodology: 19 boys and men, between the ages of 13 and 55, active on different levels in the Swedish Equestrian Sports Federation, were interviewed in the study. In a first step, a narrative analysis was conducted. Five narratives, illustrating central themes and experiences in the informants´ stories were constructed. In a second step a feminist post-structuralist reading of the five narratives was carried out.

Results and discussion: The results indicate that participation in female-coded sports, like equestrian sports, can open up to other and less stereotypical ways of being a boy or man than participation in sports traditionally seen as masculine. Since the everyday activities contains both elements that we usually (in our culture) define as female, for example care, communication and sensitivity and elements we usually define as male, for example initiative, strength and courage, boys get the opportunity to practice assumed feminine as well as assumed masculine positions. In this way dominant discourses about boys and girls and men and women – how they “are” and what they like – are challenged. At the same time the stories make visible that boys and men in equestrian sports have to relate to the surrounding society’s view of horse riding as a “girl sport” and to heteronormative gender discourses in which men in equestrian sports are competitive and goal oriented, don’t like to cuddle with horses and think that the best thing with horse riding is the girls. It seems as if one strategy for handling this is to emphasize masculinity – and especially heterosexuality – to show that you in spite of everything are a “normal” guy. In this way the “fag” becomes a sort of “border agent” – a stereotype that both allows and restricts, but above all makes visible a heteronormative order.

Figuring More Livable Elsewheres: Queering Acts, Moments, and Spaces in Sport (Studies)2017In: Journal of Sport and Social Issues, ISSN 0193-7235, E-ISSN 1552-7638, Vol. 41, no 4, p. 290-306Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Inspired by calls for an emphasis on the "potentiality of the present" in feminist and queer (sport) studies, this article explores queering acts, moments, and spaces in stories of athletes living nonstraight. To do this, we use Haraway's and Braidotti's notion of figuration and creative analytical writing. With one foot rooted in what is, our three figurations of the queering athlete take us into and beyond heteronormativity to what can be(come). Two figurations enact how sex segregation and gender norms in sports can serve as conditions of possibilities that open up for other-worlds-in-the-making and the third works sexuality against identity and queers the hetero–homo binary. They are figurations—in form and content—of a "science of the possibility of science."

    (Re)presenting equestrian histories—storytelling as a method of inquiry.2016In: Sport, Education and Society, ISSN 1357-3322, E-ISSN 1470-1243, Vol. 21, no 1, p. 82-95Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Responding to calls about the need to ‘give voice’ to groups previously marginalized in research and to challenge meta-narratives about men in sports this paper explores the use of a narrative approach to illuminate men's experiences—and the doing of gender—within equestrian sports, a sport dominated by women in Sweden. Adopting the position of a storyteller three literary short-stories were constructed from interviews with men active in equestrianism. (Re)presenting research findings in this way evoke a lot of questions in academic circles. We have often been askedhowthe stories were constructed and how one judges whether they are representative and trustworthy. These are legitimate questions, no doubt. But questions that are of importance to all qualitative research. It is as if the writing of stories is some kind of mysterious abracadabra activity and not a deliberate and theoretically informed creative process. While reading critique of narrative ways to (re)present research findings, where some researchers suggest that narrative inquiry is a retreat from the difficult academic work of generating new and important ideas, our assumption is that it stems from this misunderstanding about story writing. And maybe the construction of stories has not been given enough attention in narrative research. The purpose of this article is therefore to illustrate the difficult but inspiring activity of transforming 19 interviews into literary short-stories and to highlight methodological concerns relating to presenting these stories. We also demonstrate that creative analytical writing is not just a way of presenting research findings but also a method of inquiry. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

“We’re here, we’re queer, get used to it!”: En studie om HBTQ och heteronormativitet inom motionsanläggningar2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Varje enskild intervju spelades in och transkriberades.

    Abstract [en]

Aim and research questions The aim of this study is to investigate how physical education teachers (PE teachers) are portrayed in Swedish films from a gender perspective as well as how these portrayals relate to international representations of PE teachers. The study will answer the following questions:

    - Which characteristics are attributed to male and female PE teachers in Swedish films?

    - What are the differences and similarities between Swedish and American depictions of PE teachers?

Theory and method The study has a qualitative approach based on the phenomenological method. To answer the research questions, a theoretical character analysis strategy based on five different characterization techniques and a literature study was applied. The data collection was based on a purposive sampling from which eight Swedish films and three American studies regarding portrayals of PE teachers were selected. The theoretical approach of ‘making gender’ was used to interpret and understand the data.

Results The results show that male PE teachers in Swedish films are portrayed with three distinct characteristics. They are portrayed as creators of security, educators and bullies. Furthermore, the female PE teacher is portrayed as a power-crazed abuser. In the comparison between Swedish and American depictions of PE teachers in films, more differences emerged than similarities. In contrast to the Swedish portrayals, American male PE teachers are portrayed as heterosexual, aggressive and low-intellectual musclemen, whilst the female PE teachers are portrayed as sex objects or butch homosexuals.

Conclusion Based on the aim of the study, three conclusions are highlighted: 1) male and female PE teachers are portrayed differently in Swedish films, 2) Swedish and American films do not have the same cultural expression regarding PE teachers and 3) Swedish films both broaden and reinforces gender stereotypes through the PE teacher characters. In order to draw more comprehensive conclusions regarding the portrayal of PE teachers in Swedish films, further research is required.

"Man tar den bästa sopan som vill stå på plan": En intervjustudie om rekrytering av handbollstränare i Stockholm2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    • Hur rekryteras handbollstränare i Stockholms handbollsklubbar?

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Idrottslärares genusföreställningar inom ämnet idrott och hälsa2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
