Aim

The general aim of this study is to examine upper secondary school teacher’s discretionary power in PE. More specifically it’s about gaining a deeper understanding of what impacts their power to form the teaching in PE. The aim is concretized in three questions: 1. What factors do upper secondary school teachers in PE consider affects their teaching? 2. What factors do upper secondary school teachers in PE consider facilitates or complicates their teaching? 3. If the teachers could choose freely, what would the teaching look like?

Method

This study is based on five qualitative interview by a semi structured interview. The sample contained of a strategical selection of participants. The criteria that the selection is based on is secondary school teachers in PE and the geographical aspects. The theoretical starting point of the study is curriculum theory and theory of frame factors and more specifically Imsens’ group division of frame factors. Imsen divides the frame factors as following: the educational frame system, the administrative, resource oriented and organization related frames and frames related to students and their cultural background.

Results

The results show that all groups and their frame factors affects the teachers’ choice of content in the teaching. Based on these groups we split the teachers’ interview answers in different subtitles inspired by Imsen, which represents what facilitates or complicates their teaching. The results show for instance that colleagues and material facilitates the teaching. Locals, curriculum and time for teaching is some things that the teachers consider complicate the teaching. The results also show that what the teachers mainly wish for are more time for teaching, money, equipment and better facilities.

Conclusions

The study shows that all of the division of frame factors made by Imsen were represented in the interviewed teachers’ answers. The categories that mainly affects the discretionary power and that were highlighted by all teachers were the educational frame system and resource oriented frames. The teachers’ wishes about changed frame factors in the subject PE were mostly represented in resource oriented frames.

Syfte och frågeställningar

Studiens övergripande syfte är att undersöka gymnasielärares handlingsutrymme i idrott och hälsa. Mer specifikt handlar det om att få en djupare förståelse för vad som inverkar på deras möjligheter att forma undervisningen i idrott och hälsa. Syftet är konkretiserat i tre frågeställningar: 1. Vilka faktorer anser gymnasielärare i idrott och hälsa påverkar deras undervisning? 2. Vilka faktorer anser gymnasielärare i idrott och hälsa underlättar respektive försvårar deras undervisning? 3. Om lärarna fick välja fritt, hur skulle undervisningen se ut då?

Metod

Studien bygger på fem kvalitativa intervjuer utifrån en semistrukturerad intervju. Urvalet utgår från ett strategiskt urval av deltagare. De kriterier som urvalet baseras på är lärare i idrott och hälsa på gymnasiet samt geografiska aspekter. Studiens teoretiska utgångspunkt är läroplansteori och ramfaktorteori och mer specifikt Imsens gruppindelning av ramfaktorer. Imsen grupperar ramfaktorerna enligt följande: det pedagogiska ramsystemet, de administrativa, resursrelaterade, organisationsrelaterade ramar och ramar med anknytning till eleverna och deras kulturella bakgrund.

Resultat

Resultatet visar att samtliga grupperingar av ramfaktorer påverkar lärarnas val av innehåll i undervisningen. Utifrån dessa grupperingar har vi delat in lärarnas intervjusvar i olika underrubriker inspirerade av Imsen, vilka representerar vad som underlättar och försvårar lärarnas undervisning. Resultatet visar bland annat att kollegor och material underlättar lärarnas undervisning. Lokaler, ämnesplan och undervisningstid är något lärarna anser försvårar undervisningen. Resultatet visar även att lärarna främst önskar att få mer undervisningstid, pengar, utrustning samt bättre lokaler.

Slutsats

Studien visar att alla Imsens indelningar av ramfaktorer finns representerade i de intervjuade lärarnas svar. De kategorier som främst påverkar handlingsutrymmet och som lyftes fram av samtliga lärare var det pedagogiska ramsystemet och resursrelaterade ramar. Lärarnas önskemål om förändrade ramfaktorer för ämnet idrott och hälsa handlade främst om resursrelaterade ramar
