Abstract [sv]

Abstract

Aim

The aim of the study was to, from a sociological perspective, examine the experienced health and lifestyle among physical education teacher education students who have finished at least three years of higher education studies characterized by health. Another aim was to analyze if there had been a difference from when they were in the beginning of their education 2008 until they were about to finish their education four years later. Questions:

*How do students rate their physical and psychological health?

*What social and cultural involvement do students experience that they have in different activities?

*How do students rate their own level of physical activity?

*What food habits do students report that they have?

Method

There were 46 students who answered a questionnaire regarding health, spare time activities, physical activity and diet. The results were analyzed in the statistical program SPSS version 19.0, and were compared with the results from the same questionnaire and population year 2008. Furthermore, the results were analyzed from a sociological view of Bourdieus theories regarding habitus, symbolic capital and field.

Results

Our result showed that there were differences between year 2008 and year 2012. The significant differences were the fact that students tend to cook food at home more often, went out dancing less often, increased their amount of time of their sedentary behavior, and also, the screen activities had increased. Results also showed that students tend to; were physically active six to seven days a week instead of three to four days a week, visit sport events less frequent, and ate snacks and fruit and vegetables more frequent.

Conclusions

The experienced health was almost unchanged when comparing results from year 2008 to year 2012. When looking at results from recent researches, about the different factors affecting health, students should be in good health. They rated themselves to be regular physical active, have a good social network, also, that they ate fruit and vegetables regularly. The implementation of the education to become a physical education teacher might affect the individuals’ level of physical activity and food habits. With the help of Bourdieu’s theories the students might have been affected to get, when looking at researches, a better health.
