Different motivs to the same object?! : A study concerning motivation level to participation in the course Idrott och hälsa A among students studying vocational and further education preparatory programs at upper secondary school. (English)
Abstract [en]

Aim and question at issue: The aim of this study is to compare the motivation to participate in the course Idrott och hälsa A between students studying vocational and further education preparatory programs at upper secondary school.

  • What level of motivation do the students of the two programs have towards participation in the course Idrott och hälsa A.
  • What kind of motivational factors are important for students in the two programs concerning participation in the course Idrott och hälsa A
  • According to the students of the two programs, what type of motivational factors would increase the motivation to participate in the course Idrott och hälsa A.

Method: A quantitative study has been carried out using a questionnaire. Thirteen randomly chosen upper secondary school classes were included in the county of Stockholm, 7 of them in the vocational program and 6 of them in the further education preparatory program. The questionnaire was filled out by 278 students, 120 in the vocational program and 158 in the higher education preparatory program. The response frequency for the study was 92 %.

Results: The results of this study show that the majority (77%) of all students in the population are highly motivated to participate in the course Idrott och hälsa A. The result shows a significant difference between the students in the two groups. The students in the higher education preparatory program show higher motivation (86%) towards participation in the course Idrott och hälsa A than the students in the vocational program (65%). The types of motivational factors are defined as external and internal. The students in the higher education preparatory program show higher extent of internal and external motivational factors than students in the vocational program. The factors mentioned by the students that would have a positive effect on their motivation to participate in the course Idrott och hälsa A were highest in the categories activity based (24%) and lesson content (24%).

Conclusion: The conclusion of the study is that the students in both programs have a high level of motivation for the course Idrott och hälsa A. The motivation level is significantly higher for the students in the higher education preparatory program than for the students in the vocational program, this is the case for both internal and external motivational factors. According to the students the kind of motivational factors that could increase their motivation are lesson content and activity based factors. One of the interesting findings in this study is the strong correlation between the lack of motivation towards the subject and the lack of interest in further study.
