Martial arts in school : A qualitative study on physical education teachers experiences of martial arts as a teaching method in schools (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The thesis focuses on the experiences and opinions of physical education teachers regarding the integration of martial arts into high school physical education (PE) courses. It aims to explore the pedagogical methods used, teachers' experiences, and the challenges and opportunities associated with introducing martial arts in the school environment.

To address key questions about the role of martial arts in school PE courses, the study employs a qualitative approach, based on a detailed analysis of existing research and theoretical frameworks, including pragmatism. Structured interviews were a key component of data collection, conducted to answer the research questions.

The findings indicate that martial arts can enhance students' physical and mental well-being, as well as contribute to their social development. Teachers often use "direct teaching" methods but also incorporate creative and student-centered approaches. A major challenge is the lack of teachers with martial arts experience, potentially leading to safety risks. Finally, the study identifies opportunities, including hopes for more PE teachers, with or without martial arts experience, to conduct martial arts-inspired lessons.
