Does distance covered in different speed zones during games differ between a U19- and senior team in the highest league of Swedish soccer during a whole season? : A quantitative comparison of distance covered in different speed zones (English)
Abstract [sv]

Syfte

Metod

Abstract [en]

Aim

The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare if the distribution of distance coveredin different speed zones differ between a U19 team and an 1st-team (senior team) in Swedishelite soccer. The comparison is made both between team level and positional level. The parameters that the analysis includes are distance covered in different speed zones, totaldistance covered, top speed and number of sprints in games during the whole season of 2022.

Method

Data was collected by normal practice of the teams during games, by Global Positioning System (GPS) units. In the U19 team (n=14) data from 24 games were included. For the 1stteam (n=22) data from 30 games were included. The data from the GPS have been anonymized before it was compiled and analyzed in Excel and Jamovi to identify any eventual differences between the teams.

Result

The analysis showed that the 1st team covered a longer distance in the lowest speedzone compared to the U19 team (p ≤ 0.05), although the result did not show statistical significance after a Bonferroni correction. There was a tendency that the U19 team performed more sprints in comparison to the 1st team. However the U19 team did not move a significantly longerdistance in sprint speed in comparison to the 1st team. When analyzing data at positionallevels, the 1st team had a significantly longer distance covered in sprint speed in many of theposition based analyses. But the result did not show significance after a Bonferroni correction.

Conclusion

Our analysis showed that there were some tendencies pointing to differences between theteams that were shown in the analysis. After the Bonferroni correction none of these differences showed significance. Nevertheless, the results can still be of relevance in practice and could be used as a framework for players who are in their last year as youth players preparing to take the step into professional soccer. The result can be useful as a base fortraining programing aimed to prepare youth players for senior soccer.
