How PE-teachers construct the concept of motivation : A qualitative interview study with pe-teachers (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to investigate the concept of motivation from a teacher's perspective and its importance for the subject of sports and health. To answer the purpose, the following questions were asked: How does physical education teachers construct the concept of motivation? And How does the physical education teacher's view of motivation reflect their work in practice?

The study was conducted using a social constructivist theoretical framework together with aqualitative form of a hermeneutic approach where semi-structured interviews have been conducted and thematic analysis applied. Six teachers who teach the subject of physical education and health have been selected from a convenience sample and interviewed. The result shows that the physical education teachers construct the concept of motivation as a driving force to perform an activity. In practice, the construction of the concept of motivation is tangible, as the physical education teachers take students' motivation into account in teaching and try to influence the students' motivation in their planning and with their leadership. The most important factor to be able to influence the students' motivation was considered to be the relationship with the students.

The conclusion we have reached from this work is that the sports teaching profession is complex and that the concept of motivation does not have a specific definition, but that it is a broad, ambiguous concept. On the other hand, there was a common denominator to describet he concept of motivation both with the interviewed physical education teachers and theprevious research, namely the concept of "driving force". Another conclusion we were able todraw from the results of the study is that all respondents consider themselves, based on their construction of the concept of motivation, to be able to influence the students' motivation. With the help of a structured planning, that the students are included and can influence their education, and that the teachers adapt their leadership, the students' motivation can be increased. But that these parts can easily fail, if there is not a good teacher - studentrelationship.
