Can more sports in school work as prevention against alcohol consumption for young people? : A quantitative study on high school students' alcohol habits with regard to the number of hours of physical education at school. (English)
Abstract [sv]
Syfte
Abstract [en]
Aim
The purpose of the study was to investigate students' alcohol habits for those who studied special sports in relation to those who did not study special sports.
Issues
- How did students' alcohol habits look for those who studied special sports compared to students who did not study special sports?
- What did the students' drinking habits look like in the last 12 months?
Method
Quantitative survey study with only fixed answer options linked to the questions. 163 high school students from two municipal high schools in central Stockholm participated in the study, where 72 students studied special sports and 91 students did not study special sports. All participants who studied special sports were involved in team sports.
Results
The most central result in the study was that there was a statistically significant difference (p=0.004) that fewer students who studied special sports had consumed alcohol compared to students who did not study special sports. However, there were no statistically significant differences in terms of the age at which the alcohol debut took place, how often the students consumed alcohol and how much on each consumption occasion.
Conclusion
The results of the study show that fewer students who studied special sports consumed alcohol than students who did not study special sports.
