Health education in Sweden and Finland : a pupil perspective (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Concerns have been raised nationally and internationally about the health of children and young people. Since knowledge about health has been shown to relate to the health of individuals, there is a need for more research on how health education should be organized. The purpose of this study is to investigate is to contribute knowledge about the teaching of and about health in two countries with a similar context but different organization of health education. The research questions are "how do the students describe health" and "what do the students feel they have learned about health at school". In addition, similarities and differences between the Finland and Sweden are discussed. The study is based on theories of pathogenic and salutogenic perspectives on health and health literacy. Data has been collected through semi-structured interviews with four Swedish and four Finnish high school students. The data has been analyzed using thematic analysis and the constructed themes are the results of the study. The results show that health is seen as the absence of disease, as a continuum or as mental, physical and sometimes social. The Finnish students are more likely to also include the social part than the Swedish students. From their health education in school, the students have learned knowledge in and about health, parts of healthism, taboo themes of health and individual responsibility on health. Knowledge of students' perceptions of health education is important because the students can answer how the education is delivered in the best way for them. Several interdisciplinary and international studies are needed to get knowledge on how the organization of health education affects students' knowledge and learning in and about health.
