How do physical education teachers meet students with eating disorders? : A qualitative study of physical education teachers experiences of teaching students with eating disorders (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Aim

This study aims to get an insight into how physical education teachers relate to students with eating disorders and how these students are met, challenged, and assessed in physical education.

1.    In what way is the subject of physical education adapted to the needs of participating students with eating disorders?

2.    How are physical education teachers assessing students with eating disorders based on their physical and psychological conditions?

Method

The study has used a qualitative method consisting of research interviews with four physical education teachers. The selection of respondents was made by a convenience selection of physical education teachers operating in high schools and a senior high school in the Stockholm area. The sociocultural perspective has constituted the theoretical framework of the study. Data processing method consisted of thematic analysis where collected material has been analysed and thematized.

Result

The physical education teachers explain the importance of having a good dialogue, challenge and include the students in the teaching. Physical education teachers take the help of student health teams, mentors and parents in the course of action when it comes to adaptions. Physical education teachers explain different difficulty levels in activities as an inclusive adaption and point out the importance of giving priority to state of health over education.

Conclusion

Important aspects contributing to progress in dealing with students with eating disorders are individual communication, support, and a positive climate in the teaching of physical education.
