What motivates elite athletes to combine college studies with their elite investment : Qualitative interview study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Aim

The purpose of this study is to investigate what motivates elite athletes to combine their elite efforts with college studies. The study's questions are:

-What motivational factors are central to elite athletes with dual careers?

-What advantages and challenges do elite athletes experience with pursuing their elite efforts in parallel with college studies?

Metod

The study has a qualitative design where semi-structured interviews were used as a data collection method. Four students participated in the study, which combined their elite investment with college studies, three male and one female. Everyone was active at the highest level in their respective sports. The studie is based on Self Determination Theory as a theoretical starting point.

Results

All participants believed that an intrinsic motivation is essential, to combine studies and elite efforts. The most central motivating factors were joy, personal development, and community. The participants perceived and experienced the combination of elite initiative and studies as very physically, mentally, and cognitively stimulating and developing. There were several challenges such as schematic difficulties, lack of time and stress. But as they gained more experience and routine, the athletes learned how to handle the challenges better.

Conclusion

Elite sports and studies relate in an interdependent relationship to each other. They saw the cognitive stimulus the studies brought with it a lot of development while at the same time they saw their elite initiative as a resource for completing their studies. With a clear structure, they have positively influenced each other in both directions, which has added increased balance and meaningfulness. The combination worked well but could periodically be very demanding. The benefits of the combination outweighed the challenges. The support from the school works well but more resources can be improved to facilitate the combination.
